Beyond the Scoreboard: NU Bulldogs’ Paul Francisco
Paul Francisco’s road to becoming a rotation player for the National University (NU) Bulldogs has been marked by perseverance, faith, and a deep love for basketball nurtured from childhood.
Growing up in Winnipeg, Canada, Francisco’s first love was soccer, but his father soon introduced him to basketball at age seven: “My dad has always pushed me to work hard — taking me to outdoor courts and open gyms just to rebound for me,” Paul recalled in our exclusive interview. He also found early inspiration watching Kobe Bryant’s relentless competitive spirit, particularly during the 2010 NBA Finals, a moment that planted the seed for his own killer instinct on the court.
By the time he was 12, Francisco was playing competitive club basketball across Winnipeg and summers with his Filipino travel team, NABA, participating in one of North America’s largest Filipino basketball tournaments every Labor Day weekend. These experiences cultivated his competitive mindset and on-court toughness.

Pandemic Pause, New Beginnings
The pandemic disrupted his plans to play college ball in the Philippines as early as 2020, forcing him to pivot and stay sharp by practicing outdoors whenever possible, but also preventing him from an early initiation into the different style of Philippine basketball. “I didn’t know what the future held, especially since I didn’t have a team after my prep year at Notre Dame,” he confessed.
Moving to the Philippines to join NU brought its own challenges — leaving family and friends behind, and adapting to new surroundings. Thankfully, extended kin in Bulacan helped ease the transition. Language was another hurdle; although he understood Tagalog, speaking it fluently took time. After two years, Paul now speaks confidently.

Settling in at NU
From management to security guards, Francisco describes the NU environment as welcoming and supportive. “I feel confident I can overcome problems on and off the court because I’m at NU,” he explained.
The Bulldogs’ tight-knit team chemistry stands out for Paul. “I’ve never been on a team where we’re all so close.”
His initially shy nature gave way as bonds with teammates strengthened, translating into more cohesive play.
A turning point was a first-round comeback game against FEU in Season 87, where Paul’s long bomb helped spark a rally from a 20-point deficit. “That game gave me confidence I could really compete in this league,” he recalled. Off the court, signing with Adidas, NU’s official merchandising partner, marked another milestone — transforming a childhood dream into reality.

Training, Preparation, and Game Day Focus
Paul’s daily routine combines academics and rigorous training: morning practice, schoolwork, and gym sessions for weightlifting or shooting. His mental prep hinges on prayer and meditation, grounding him with gratitude and focus. Music preferences lean toward calm R&B to maintain composure before games.
“I try to be mindful and present — taking in everything around me to block out distractions,” he shared, underscoring a disciplined approach to mental readiness.

Looking Forward: Championship and Beyond
With two UAAP seasons remaining, the once walk-on’s immediate goal is clear: help the Bulldogs win a championship, their first since 2014.
“Coach Jeff says to be a star in your role, so I’m focused on contributing both offensively and defensively,” he explained.
Long term, Paul aspires to a sustained professional career, carrying the same work ethic and energy he’s known for. But his ambitions extend beyond personal success.
“I want to inspire kids to chase their dreams,” he sayid. As the first player from his city to compete in the UAAP, he hopes his journey shows that no dream is too small. Inspired by friends coaching youth, he plans to give back by mentoring young players, using basketball as a platform to teach life values and faith.
At NU, he aims to be remembered as “a good teammate who did the right things” and leaves as a champion.
Francisco embodies the blend of talent, faith, and effort. From Winnipeg courts to the UAAP spotlight, his story goes beyond the scoreboard.
