Cade Cunningham: A Star Cut from the Old Cloth

Cade Cunningham is a true-blue Piston. Like Zeke, Dumars, Billups, and Big Ben, he’s a star cut from the old cloth.

With 1:54 left in the 4th quarter and a 2-point lead, ball in his hands by the logo, rejected a Javonte Green pick and tore through the 76er defense. He then launched a nasty poster on Andre Drummond. With a foul. The Pistons won the game by three points.

It is refreshing to see a number one draft pick turn out to be a true franchise cornerstone. Sticking with the Pistons when they won 14 games and lost 68 in a season gives a lot of contrast to this years’ impressive 8-2 start. Cade has faced a lot of criticism over the years–that he could not carry a team and that he’s another bust–yet he has recently proven that he’s probably one of the next big names in the league, once the Stephs and the LeBrons leave.

In 10 games, he has averaged 26 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds. Of course, he’s not alone–he has a young Detroit squad who seems to be cut from the Pistons teams of old–they rank number 3 in the best NBA defenses in the season, only behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets. 

This year seems to be Cade’s year.
