KarlTzy: Malaysia Is the New Rival of the Philippines

If rivalries are built on proximity, pressure, and repeated clashes at the highest level, then the Philippines’ true rival today isn’t Indonesia. It’s Malaysia. And KarlTzy agrees.

KarlTzy didn’t hesitate when asked who now stands closest to the Philippines.

“Ang closest rivalry ngayon, Malaysia at Philippines din.”

(“The closest rivalry now is Malaysia and the Philippines.”)

That answer reflects what recent international tournaments have been showing. Malaysian teams have become sharper, more disciplined, and far more dangerous in high-stakes series.

Malaysia is actively closing the gap.

At M7, the tournament itself underscored how brutal the current era has become. KarlTzy agreed that this was the most difficult World Championship yet for the Philippines.

The challenge no longer comes from familiar Indonesian opponents such as RRQ, ONIC, or Geek Fam. Now, it comes from regions that have studied the PH system, adapted to its tempo, and learned how to punish mistakes. Malaysia has been at the forefront of that evolution, blending mechanical skill with strategic patience.

Still, KarlTzy acknowledged that history has a way of lingering in esports narratives.

“Pero ang nostalgic din kasi ng feeling kapag Indonesia at Pilipinas.”

(“It’s nostalgic if you think about the rivalry of Indonesia and the Philippines.”)

Nostalgia, however, doesn’t win matches. What defines a rivalry today is relevance—and Malaysia is relevant in ways Indonesia currently isn’t. They contest drafts more evenly, survive late-game chaos, and push Philippine teams into uncomfortable territory.
