The Return of the Tigers

Kyler Escobar’s journey with the University of Santo Tomas has come full circle. From a rookie finding his footing to a senior striker now leading the line as captain, Escobar stands at the heart of a Tigers side back where it believes it belongs — the Final Four.

Now a graduating player, Escobar is captaining UST through a season that feels refreshed and purposeful. After the bitter ending of UAAP Season 87, the Tigers returned with a mindset shift that changed everything.

“In the past seasons, we were often relying on the results of other teams to see if we would make the top four,” Escobar told ALL-STAR. “This season, we decided to focus on our own game.”

That approach paid off, as UST secured a top-three spot early, even before the eliminations ended, removing any doubt about their place in the semifinals.

The road, however, wasn’t without challenges.

Injuries tested the squad, with four key players sidelined at different points of the campaign. Instead of derailing the run, the Tigers stayed steady.

“The group stayed calm and disciplined,” Escobar said. “We learned to focus on the next game and trust the players who stepped up,” said Escobar.

Much of that confidence came from the bench. According to Escobar, Marjo Allado and the coaching staff consistently reminded them of their goals and the plan they had for the team. More than tactics, belief made the difference.

“They made us feel their belief and trust, which gave us confidence during the tougher stretches of the season,” he added.

As captain, Escobar takes pride in how the team leads itself. “Leadership is shared,” he said. “In training, everyone leads in their own way, regardless of seniority.” That shared responsibility has helped build a culture anchored in respect, discipline, and trust in the system.

Now, Escobar and the UST Growling Tigers turn their focus to the next challenge:  a semifinal clash against the twice-to-beat powerhouse FEU Tamaraws on February 8 at 4:30 PM

With momentum on their side and belief running deep, the Tigers head into the matchup ready to test just how far this redemption run can go.
