Back in Black

The Spurs wear their classic black jerseys in Game 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Victor Wembanyama is also back in black after getting ejected in game 4 for elbowing Minnesota forward Naz Reid.

The Spurs win game 5 (126-97) and lead the series 3-2.

The San Antonio Spurs are one game away from being in the western conference finals.

Victor Wembanyama hit the ground running and had a stat explosion (27 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks) in his game back from that game 4 ejection. He probably had a lot of pent-up energy from being ejected in the first half of the previous game.

The Minnesota defense did not really know how to deal with Wembanyama (who does?), particularly in pick & roll scenarios and he is the roll man. A score is almost a certainty whenever Wemby gets inside the paint. Gobert tried his best, but Wemby can punish even those half-a-second lapses and delays.

The Timberwolves did not shoot very well (38%, 27% from 3). The Spurs shot 52%.

Anthony Edwards had a team high 20 points, and his grit is commendable–he is playing while injured, and he probably knows he’s sort of gambling on his future here.

The Spurs have a chance to seal the deal, but that is not automatic because they now go back to Minnesota for Game 6. The Timberwolves have to step up if the want to even the series–Randle, Dosunmu, Reid, and McDaniels all have to chip in.

The 17-man deep Oklahoma City Thunder are already waiting in the conference finals. Are we seeing the anticipated Spurs vs Thunder match-up, or will Ant and the Wolves spoil the party?

Game 6 is on Saturday, May 16, 2026, 9:30AM PST
