One Game Away

The Oklahoma City Thunder win the pivotal Game 5 at home, and become one game away from being in the NBA Finals. Again.

Chet Holmgren has been relatively “quiet” in this series against the San Antonio Spurs, to the point that a lot of pundits have said that he is terrified of Victor Wembanyama.

Well, he showed up tonight (sort of). He made his first shots in the game, and his final stat line is this: 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 1 block. His presence was finally felt in the paint.

The Thunder needed his output because Jalen Williams, the team’s number 2 scoring option, and Ajay Mitchell, a key scorer and shot-creator, were both out. Coach Mark Daigneault put Jared McCain in the starting line-up.

Because of Shai’s gravity, a lot of players had some open looks, like McCain (20 pts) and Alex Caruso (22 pts). This team is tough to beat if the shooters make their shots.

After Victor Wembanyama had a monster game 4, he was relatively contained today with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. It was apparent that he was settling with jumpers at times, as opposed to the way he had gone to the paint in the previous game. Is fatigue finally catching up with the San Antonio boys?

The Thunder shot 48% from the deep, in contrast to San Antonio’s 29%. The Spurs have to defend the three better, and their own snipers will have to step up as the entire defense collapses on Wembanyama.

Game 6 is back in San Antonio, and the Spurs better be in survival mode. The defending champs will be looking to finish off the young upstarts, as losing this game means a momentum swing for the Spurs in a sudden death game 7.

Game 6 is on Friday, May 29, 8:30 AM PST.
