Rain or Shine Looks to Extend Gian Mamuyac, Open to Trades

Looks like Gian Mamuyac might stay with Rain or Shine after all — at least for the rest of this season.

Caloy Garcia, head of basketball operations who also serves as deputy mentor to head coach Yeng Guiao, shared this latest development to ALL-STAR Magazine.

“We’re now looking at giving him a contract extension until the end of next [Governors’ Cup] conference,” said Garcia. “This will allow him to at least focus on playing with us while we can still negotiate in between the rest of the conference.”

According to Garcia, the Elasto Painters plan to offer Mamuyac a contract extension beginning June 30, especially after they learned that the player’s camp might no longer pursue the previous offer reportedly given to the player by a Japanese B. League team.

Initially, Rain or Shine’s plan was not to give Mamuyac a contract extension or make a new offer to allow the former Ateneo stalwart an opportunity of pursuing a better deal in Japan, which would have more monetary benefits than the maximum, P420K per month salary in the PBA.

But things changed over the past few days as the Elasto Painters are now looking to give Mamuyac, their team captain and one of their young stars, a contract extension that would last until the end of the Governors’ Cup, as well as options of more opportunities to explore.

A part of these opportunities include renegotiations while the season is ongoing or even a possible trade.

“These are the options,” added Garcia. “Puwede kaming mag-usap or mag-renegotiate while the conference is going on or if may better trade offers, we can pursue that.”

“We will also give them the chance of negotiating for the contract from the team which wants to pursue Gian. “ added Garcia.

Rain or Shine’s is coming off another solid campaign in the Commissioner’s Cup where the team reached the semifinal round anew. The team has made the Final Four five times in the last six conferences.

Garcia added they desire to keep Mamuyac and want him to continue to be part of the team’s solid, growing core.

“In the end, we want Gian to be happy,” said Garcia. “If he’s happy with us, then we can renegotiate. If not, then perhaps we can do something that should be beneficial for all of us.”
