Half A Million 6th Men: SIBOL’s Asian Games Campaign

The Philippine national esports team SIBOL has reached a major digital milestone, surpassing 500,000 followers on Facebook as it continues its campaign in the Asian Games qualifiers.

For Marlon Marcelo, Executive Director of the Philippine Esports Organization (PESO), the figure signals a deepening connection between the national esports team and its supporters.

“Reaching 500,000 followers on our Facebook page is a significant milestone, but more than the number, it represents the growing trust and connection between the national team and the Filipino esports community. When we started the Sibol program, our goal was not just to build a competitive team, but to create a national symbol that Filipinos could rally behind,” Marcelo said.

He added that the rapid growth of SIBOL’s online community also raises expectations for the program moving forward.

“This growth also brings a greater sense of responsibility for us at PESO. Having half a million people watching means we have to work even harder to refine our programs, support our athletes, and ensure we are representing the country in the best possible way.”

The ‘6th Man’ Brings Home Court Advantage Overseas

With the Asian Games qualifiers underway, Marcelo emphasized how the online community now plays a crucial competitive role.

“In traditional sports, home-court advantage is a real thing because of the crowd. In esports, our ‘ka-6th man’ online community serves as that home crowd. The ongoing Asian Games qualifiers are highly competitive and mentally demanding for our players. Knowing that they have half a million supporters standing behind them on social media provides a genuine psychological boost.”

He also pointed out the practical impact of the milestone, particularly in strengthening the program’s sustainability.

“A strong and engaged community makes the Sibol program more viable for partners and sponsors. Their support directly translates to better bootcamps, equipment, and preparation for our athletes.”

As the qualifiers intensify, SIBOL continues to lean on both performance and public backing, with Marcelo underscoring how the 500,000-strong community helps fuel the program’s push toward the Asian stage at the Asian Games.
