PLDT Braces for Tough PVL Invitational Title Defense

Last year, PLDT chased the championship.

This time, the championship comes with a target on its back.

That is the challenge awaiting the PLDT High Speed Hitters as they begin their title defense in the 2026 PVL Invitational Conference on Monday (Aug. 31) at the Araneta Coliseum.

PLDT enters the tournament with confidence after going 2-0 in the recently concluded PVL On Tour Showdown.

But once the games begin, the High Speed Hitters will have to show that last year’s Invitational triumph was more than a breakthrough moment—it was a sign of what this team can consistently achieve.

A year ago, PLDT put together a memorable run, first capturing the PVL On Tour title before carrying that momentum into the Invitational, where the High Speed Hitters eventually lifted the championship trophy.

Now, they return as the defending champions—and with that comes a different kind of pressure.

The target is no longer on someone else.

PLDT will have to navigate a six-team field featuring familiar rivals Creamline Cool Smashers, Nxled Chameleons and Farm Fresh Foxies, along with foreign guest teams EST Cola of Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.

But perhaps the most familiar threat comes from Creamline.

The Cool Smashers are looking to reclaim the Invitational crown they won in 2022 and 2024, setting up another chapter in their rivalry with PLDT.

But PLDT has plenty of firepower of its own.

PLDT will lean on a deep lineup led by Savi Davison, Kim Dy, Alleiah Malaluan, Jovie Prado and Jessey de Leon, with Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes and Seth Rodriguez providing additional experience and presence at the net.

That depth could prove crucial in a tournament that leaves little room for rest.

For a team trying to stay on top, the challenge is not simply winning one big game.

It is finding a way to keep winning. PLDT knows that better than most.

After its breakthrough run last year, however, PLDT could not sustain that momentum through the latter stages of this year’s All-Filipino Conference, eventually settling for third place. This time, head coach Rald Ricafort will hope the team’s experience, depth and familiarity with pressure can help PLDT avoid another late stumble.

Last year, PLDT proved it could climb to the top. Now comes the harder part: staying there.

With the target firmly on their backs, the High Speed Hitters will have to weather a tougher field, a demanding schedule and the weight of expectations that comes with being champions.

The trophy is theirs to defend.
