Mulingtapang to leave UE, Choosing Between NCAA Contenders
Nico Mulingtapang is set to leave the UE Red Warriors and pursue a new chapter in the NCAA, a move aimed at placing him in a better environment for long-term development as a college basketball player.
The decision was confirmed by his manager, Anthony Brodett of Phenom Sports Management, who said the move is focused on helping Mulingtapang find the best possible fit for growth. After assessing his situation in the UAAP, both sides agreed that a change of scenery could provide better opportunities for on-court development and role clarity.
Mulingtapang is currently considering three NCAA programs: San Beda Red Lions, College of St. Benilde Blazers, and Letran Knights. He is expected to work out with and meet representatives from each program before making a final decision.
Under NCAA rules, Mulingtapang will serve a one-year residency period in 2026. He will then have three remaining years of eligibility beginning NCAA Season 103 in 2027. The timeline gives him a full year to adjust to his new program, develop physically, and learn the system before returning to competitive play.
Mulingtapang joined UE ahead of UAAP Season 87 after a strong junior career that included notable performances in the NBTC National Finals, where he showed scoring ability, rebounding from the guard position, and poise in high-pressure games.
He entered the UAAP as a young point guard prospect with upside, but UE’s recent struggles, including a winless Season 88 campaign, limited opportunities for consistent growth and stability.
The move to the NCAA presents a different competitive environment, one that often emphasizes player development, defined roles, and continuity within programs. All three schools under consideration are known for structured systems and basketball cultures, factors that could benefit a guard still shaping his collegiate identity.
For now, Mulingtapang and his camp remain focused on finding the best long-term fit rather than rushing a decision.
