From Fantasy to All-Star Reality
At around 1 p.m., Cara Vergel De Dios woke up from a quick lunch nap and glanced at the notification on her phone. The email subject line caught her attention immediately. She opened it and read the words that would turn a normal afternoon into something unforgettable:
Congratulations, you are the official winner.
“I was really surprised,” she said in an exclusive with ALL-STAR Magazine. “I kept saying it was a blessing.”
The message meant she was going to Los Angeles for NBA All-Star Weekend 2026.
Cara had entered the promotion through Daily Fantasy, where users could earn raffle entries by collecting points and competing in daily contests. She had been playing on the platform since March 2025, after seeing promotional posters at one of the basketball courts she regularly visited. Cara, it should be noted, is a hooper.
But her path to the trip wasn’t straightforward. The original winner of the promotion was unable to attend because of visa issues, and Daily Fantasy reached out to qualified participants who already had valid U.S. visas. Cara immediately sent hers in.
“It was an answered prayer,” she said. “I was really hoping to go.”
Within a couple of days, reality started to sink in. She was heading to All-Star Weekend, a nirvana for die-hard NBA fans in the Philippines, and something she had never experienced before.
For Cara, basketball had long been a constant presence in her life. She spent years living in Cubao and regularly watched games at the historic Araneta Coliseum. If there was a basketball game on television, her eyes were glued to it.

“No one really introduced me to the NBA,” she said with a laugh. “It was all self-study.”
Like many fans of her generation, she gravitated toward the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets during Tracy McGrady’s peak tenure. She admired T-Mac’s style and intensity, remembering both his explosive dunks in Orlando and the unforgettable 13 points in 40 seconds comeback in Houston against their interstate rival San Antonio.
Seeing McGrady in person years later felt like a personal milestone.
“I finally made it,” she said. “Watching the NBA live and seeing my favorite player.”
Basketball still plays a regular role in her daily life. She builds fantasy basketball lineups on Daily Fantasy and plays pickup games every week. Yet before this trip, she had never attended an NBA game in person.
The timing of the trip added another unexpected twist. Cara was already in the United States for the Vibes World Championship in Portland, a competitive trading card game tournament built around the Pudgy Penguins intellectual property. The game blends strategy and prediction, something she enjoys.
“Card games are basically puzzles disguised as games,” she said. “Every turn is about reading the board, predicting what your opponent might do, and figuring out the best line to take.”
She finished in the top eight out of forty players at the tournament, an achievement she describes as one of her proudest moments. She was also one of only two female competitors in the field.
Portland was intense and focused. Los Angeles was something entirely different.
“It felt like a complete shift in energy,” she said. “Portland was about strategy and competing at the highest level. All-Star Weekend had this big, exciting atmosphere with fans and events everywhere. It was more of a celebration.”

For the trip to Los Angeles, Cara brought her mother as her plus-one. Her mother flew in with Daily Fantasy from Manila to meet her for the weekend.
When Cara first told her about the trip, the reaction was disbelief.
“She thought it was a scam,” Cara said, joking.
Once they arrived, the scale of the event quickly became clear. Inside the Intuit Dome, the atmosphere was electric.
“She was excited and thrilled to see them score,” Cara said of her mom. “The dome lights up every time a player scores. The hype and excitement of everyone watching was amazing.”
The weekend began with the Foot Locker takeover event on Friday, where fans took part in a shooting challenge. Participants had to make baskets from a designated distance to win prizes.
“There were a lot of fans competing,” she said. “But of course I won something. No doubt about it.”
She also took advantage of the trip to pick up a few pairs of sneakers. By the end of the weekend she had purchased four pairs, including two A’ja Wilson models, a Kobe 6, and a Sabrina 2.
The Sabrina 2 quickly became her favorite.
“I like the colorway,” she said.
At NBA Crossover at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the atmosphere felt like a playground for basketball fans. The event featured skill challenges, fan competitions, and interactive exhibits.
Late one night, Cara decided to enter the State Farm three-point contest. By then it was close to 11 p.m., and she admitted she was already exhausted despite all the experiences that felt like fantasy.
“I only made one shot,” she said with a laugh. “I was so gassed.”
Her mother stood nearby recording the moment on video while a small crowd watched.
Saturday’s festivities led to the moment that made the whole experience feel real. When she finally saw the court and the players gathered together, the magnitude of the event hit her.

Later, from seats in the lower box section, she watched some of the biggest names in basketball take the floor. She spotted LeBron James and McGrady among the stars.
The All-Star Game itself surprised her. Instead of a casual exhibition, the new format produced real intensity.
“The games were competitive and the players really showed up for the fans,” she said.
The loudest moments came when Kawhi Leonard erupted with a scoring run and when De’Aaron Fox delivered a game-winning shot, followed by a chest bump from Bron. Despite a competitive Victor Wembanyama upping the stakes, Leonard’s performance stood out most to her.
“He wasn’t in the original list,” she said. “But he really deserved to be an All-Star.”
Earlier that morning, Cara also attended a WNBA clinic, where she saw firsthand how the women’s game continues to grow.
“The women’s basketball scene is getting bigger,” she said. “In a few years it will really take off.”
Throughout the weekend, she wore an NBA Philippines shirt one day and noticed people pointing it out. Some event hosts asked where she was from, which made her feel like she was carrying a small piece of Filipino basketball culture with her.

When the weekend finally ended, one moment stood above the rest.
“Seeing all the NBA stars in one arena,” she said. “That might never happen again.”
The trip also gave her a new appreciation for the commitment of fans who travel across the world to attend events like this.
“Being an NBA fan is a very expensive experience,” she said. “I admire the hardcore fans and their love for the game.”
If she had the chance to relive one moment, she said she would probably take another shot at that three-point contest. With more energy, she believes she could have made a few more.
Still, the experience she earned thanks to determination and consistency with Daily Fantasy was more than enough.
For Cara, a basketball fan who spent years watching games on television and at arenas in Manila, the weekend felt like something straight out of a dream.
“Dreams don’t always feel real,” she said. “Until they do.”
