How Bam and His 83 Broke NBA Fantasy

Bam Adebayo has impressively broken Kobe’s 81-point record, which was the second highest scoring NBA game by an individual behind Wilt’s 100. Some people are happy, some are not, but the question remains–how far can the Heat go this year given the numbers?

How Bam’s record night broke NBA Fantasy leagues

Numbers don’t lie, particularly in fantasy contests–traditional or Daily Fantasy format.

All the fantasy picks and the fantasy squads that had Bam Adebayo in their lineups had collective ughs and oofs when they checked their live stats, and saw that he already had scored 31 points in the first quarter. When they checked again and saw that he had 43 in the first half, they probably rejoiced because their numbers and stats had been unpredictably boosted. When they checked yet again and saw that he had 61 with a quarter left, they thought of one thing: he’s going for Kobe’s 81!

The poor sods who went against Bam and found him in the opposite team were probably initially annoyed and were scratching their heads on why they picked Alex Sarr instead, but such is the joy of explosions like this–there would have been a point where even the Alex Sarr pickers went, “hey, I’m not even mad, this is pretty impressive..”

Bam’s 83-point game should be celebrated. It is impressive for an NBA player to score 83 points under whatever circumstance. Detractors are putting an asterisk on the performance, saying that the game is a non-consequential game played against a tanking Wizards team without any interior defense, or saying that he suspiciously shot 43 free throws, or that he wasn’t double or triple-covered until the end.

Those things are valid, yes, but the fact remains–Bam made those shots. He shot threes, drove for twos, and abused the lackluster defense. Maybe the story would’ve been different if Anthony Davis were playing, but at the end of it was pretty simple and straightforward: Bam shot the ball a lot of times, and it went in a lot of times.

The Heat’s Playoff Chances

The Miami Heat are currently on a 7-game win streak which included victories from stronger teams such as the conference leaders Detroit Pistons, and the dynamic Houston Rockets. The Heat squad is hoping that Bam is nuclear every night, because it is possible for them to get the top 4 spot and the homecourt advantage when the playoffs arrive.

The Heat could make the playoffs if Bam’s supporting cast can stay healthy and consistent. Norman Powell and Tyler Herro are reliable contributors, but they are in and out of the line-up. Young players like Mitchell, Jaquez, and Ware are also valuable. Everyone needs to step up, particularly now that the other contenders like the Magic and the Celtics have gotten stronger.
