Will 25-26 Wembanyama Take the Spurs Back to Their Glory Days?

Victor Wembanyama had an eventful offseason. He just posted some of his summer “shenanigans,” which included photos of him with Snoop Dogg, Daniel Radcliffe, and NBA legend and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. He has also been meditating with the monks in China, and had sessions with the Big Ticket, Kevin Garnett. He also hosted Hoop Gambit, a chess tournament that had strong masters on it.

If you’re a Spurs fan, this is what you want to hear. A very young, yet also a potentially generational, game-changing talent who displays a lust for life and competition. Remember the way he stared at the ecstatic Team USA triumvirate of KD-LeBron-Steph in the Paris Olympics’ gold medal game right after they lost? That’s the Wemby that’s coming this year.

Last season, Wemby had a great run–he was supposed to be the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year until he got injured and was unable to meet the minimum number of games required. He scored 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. His real value, aside from his shot-making and facilitating skills, lies in his defense–4 blocks and 2 steals per game–and a ton of disrupted shots. That 7’10’’ wingspan is no joke.

But will he be a good fantasy pick?

For Daily Fantasy Players: HOT! Wemby is practically unguardable. He can shoot, he has handles, and he can dunk over 7-foot defenders. He will get points and rebounds. Every matchup is a field day for Wemby–even talented bigs like Walker Kessler, Chet Holmgren, and Kristaps Porzingis are not consistent defensively against him.

For Traditional Fantasy Players: HOT! Wemby is a must pick. The Spurs just re-signed De’Aaron Fox to a 4 year extension. They also still have Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Stephon Castle, and #2 pick Dylan Harper. The Spurs have assembled a great-looking squad around him.
