Savvy Games to Buy MOONTON for $6 Billion. Here’s What We Know
Saudi Arabia-backed Savvy Games Group has agreed to acquire Moonton from ByteDance in a deal valued at approximately $6 billion, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the global video game industry.
The agreement, confirmed on March 20, 2026, transfers ownership of the Shanghai-based developer best known for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, a title with massive popularity across Southeast Asia and a cornerstone of the region’s esports ecosystem.
While financial terms were not officially disclosed, sources familiar with the matter said the transaction values Moonton at more than $6 billion, aligning with earlier reports that placed negotiations in the $6 billion to $7 billion range, according to a report by Reuters.
Strategic shift for ByteDance
The sale represents a significant strategic pivot for ByteDance, which acquired Moonton in 2021 for around $4 billion through its gaming arm, Nuverse.
In recent years, ByteDance has scaled back its gaming ambitions following a 2023 restructuring, opting instead to focus on artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, and its core platforms such as TikTok.
Industry analysts view the divestment as part of a broader retreat from big-budget gaming, despite Moonton’s strong global performance and enduring esports footprint.
Savvy doubles down on gaming ambitions
For Savvy Games Group, the acquisition reinforces its aggressive expansion strategy as it seeks to position Saudi Arabia as a global hub for gaming and esports. The company is owned by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has allocated billions toward gaming investments worldwide.
Savvy CEO Brian Ward said the acquisition would strengthen the firm’s position in mobile gaming, deepen its talent pool, and expand its global esports reach.
Moonton’s integration is expected to significantly boost Savvy’s presence in key growth markets, particularly in Asia, where Mobile Legends maintains a dominant player base and competitive ecosystem.
Continuity for Moonton
Despite the ownership change, Moonton’s leadership and operational structure are expected to remain intact. CEO Zhang Yunfan will continue to lead the company, ensuring continuity in both development and esports operations.
Industry implications
The deal underscores ongoing consolidation in the global gaming industry, as companies race to secure valuable intellectual property and expand distribution channels.
At roughly $6 billion, the acquisition ranks among the largest in gaming history and highlights the growing influence of state-backed investment vehicles in shaping the future of digital entertainment.
For Southeast Asia—particularly markets like the Philippines where Mobile Legends dominates both casual play and esports—the transaction could signal a new phase of investment, expansion, and commercialization under Savvy’s ownership.
