Miller: Once San Beda Called, I Hopped on the Plane

Janti Miller’s story isn’t your average recruit’s tale—his journey from the U.S. to the San Beda Red Lions is highlighted by both risk and reward.

Miller Before San Beda

Before landing in Manila, Janti played for Vanden High School basketball in California, showcasing skills many thought belonged on a bigger stage.

However, the pandemic hit in 2022, throwing Miller’s basketball dreams off course.

“I wanted to do a gap year and pursue social media,” Janti recalled.

As he built up his online presence, fans and friends kept encouraging him still. "You're too good not to be playing," they'd say, reminding him of his potential.

Despite less time spent training, Janti still found himself playing under NBA legend Gary Payton—a brief but unforgettable experience.

Even then, things weren’t smooth on landing a formal team as some of them cared more about what was on paper than what he showed on the court–as Janti terms it, “key word: résumé.”

Certain players had more history playing for renowned teams while Janti’s journey was still in the works. Regardless, people noticed his exceptional skills and athleticism wherever he went.

Miller Starting with San Beda

San Beda team manager Jude Roque noticed his talent instantly. “San Beda called and I was on a flight in 3 days,” Janti shared, never wanting to waste a moment for the opportunity.

With a supportive family behind him, Janti looked to the Philippines—hoping to improve his basketball profile further.

“I’ve been through a lot in my life, and my family were the only ones who got me through it.”

Janti recalled that in support of his move to another country, they threw him a going-away party with all the important people in his life.

Miller Finally a Red Lion

Once Janti settled with his new team, it did not take long before he showcased his athleticism and hooping skills halfway across the world.

He immediately became the top scorer and mythical five member of the AsiaBasket College Campus Tour, his first stint as a Red Lion.

In this tournament, he averaged 21.3 PPG, with a notable 33 points in a match against the College of St. Benilde Blazers.

Miller After(?) San Beda

His original plan? Use San Beda as a launchpad for the NBA G League. Although now, he says, “I’m starting to love it out here basketball-wise.”

Janti even shared, “I’ve heard and seen them (TNT Tropang Giga),” referring to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team where his head coach, Yuri Escueta, is also part of the coaching staff.

Still, “PBA [is] not an option for me right now,” Janti added.

With Miller focusing on his collegiate stint at the moment, shining for the Red Lions and embracing this new chapter, both he and San Beda look to become a force to be reckoned with in NCAA season 101.
