Mason Amos on MCL Tear, Long Recovery: ‘I have faith in God’

De La Salle University forward Mason Amos is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks after tearing the MCL in his right knee during La Salle’s UAAP Season 88 matchup against National University on Sunday, October 12.

The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter when NU’s Gelo Santiago fell on Amos’ leg after trying to contest a hand-off by Kean Baclaan.

Amos immediately clutched his knee and was helped off the court. He was later seen leaving the arena on a wheelchair. After the game, La Salle head coach Topex Robinson said the debuting Green Archer this season told them he “heard a pop” in his knee. An MRI later that evening in Makati Medical Center confirmed the MCL tear.

The good news for La Salle is that Amos won’t require surgery. He will undergo rehabilitation and, while far from certain, can maybe return after the elimination round, depending on how his recovery progresses.

Mason had been averaging 8.2 points, 33% 3-point shooting, 3.2 assists, and 2.8 rebounds over the first five games of the season. He was beginning to find his footing with the Green Archers after transferring from Ateneo, and his absence will be a major adjustment for the team’s rotation heading into the second round.

Speaking after the diagnosis, Amos remained composed and hopeful.

“I’m just trying to process it, but I have faith in God and that he has a plan for me, so I will just do my best to get back stronger,” he said in an exclusive interview.

He also expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from the Lasallian community.

“For sure the community shows me nothing but love and support,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of a return this season, Amos said he’s taking a careful, step-by-step approach.

“I’m just going to take it day by day and see how it heals,” he said.

With Amos sidelined, La Salle will look to other recruits to step up as they navigate the remainder of the season. His progress in rehab will be closely watched, especially if the Archers make a deep playoff push.
