2 and 0
The New York Knicks keep their postseason win streak alive as they move 2 wins away from an NBA championship.
So far, the San Antonio Spurs’ inexperience (or fatigue) are proving too costly in the NBA Finals series against the wily Knicks, who now find themselves up 2-0, with the next 2 games scheduled to be played in Madison Square Garden.
The Spurs are in a very precarious situation.
Despite trailing for much of game 2, Wemby and company staged a late game surge which enabled a tie in the final minute. Up by 1 in the final seconds, Victor Wembanyanma finally cracked and made quite human mistakes–throwing a turnover, committing an ill-advised foul, and missing a potential game-winning jumper in succession.
The New York Knicks have been quite successful in containing Wemby. Karl Towns and Mitchell Robinson have done better than Holmgren and Hartenstein in the previous series.
Both Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama have had slow starts, but Brunson seems to have a button that he can turn on when it matters.
The Knicks have a chance to complete a historic playoff run if they win the next 2 home games. That is easier said than done, though. Wemby and the Spurs generally do well in away games, and they will be in survival mode in the next two games.
Wemby has to take the ball to the paint more often because that’s where he creates the most damage, and that’s the best way to create opportunities for his teammates. However, the cumulative fatigue seems to be getting the better of him as he seems to be content enough to settle for jumpers. Credit must go to coach Mike Brown and the Knicks, as they are not making it easy for Wemby to score inside.
Game 3 is Tuesday morning (June 9, 8:30 AM PHT).
