Fantasy Series #4: The Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics look totally different now. Was letting Jaylen Brown walk away the right decision?

The Fantasy series looks at the featured team’s season statistical performance and explores offseason possibilities.

2025-2026 Key Season Stats

Jayson Tatum – 21.8 points per game, 10 rebounds per game, 5.3 assists per game

Jaylen Brown – 28.7 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game, 5.1 assists per game

Derrick White – 16.5 points per game, 5.4 assists per game, 1.1 steals per game

Payton Pritchard – 17 points per game

The Boston Celtics initiated a major roster overhaul this offseason. Jaylen Brown, top player and producer for the team last year, is now a Philadelphia 76er. The move was surrounded by drama, as rumors of a ruined team chemistry following a botched Giannis-for-Brown trade hit the news channels shortly after the NBA Finals.

Last season, the Celtics won 56 games, and most of those wins were earned without marquee player Jayson Tatum who was recovering from a torn achilles tendon. Jaylen Brown stepped up and contributed a lot, and despite the lack of a proper big man (only Neemias Queta was the serviceable one), they made the playoffs.

Unfortunately, they lost to the 76ers in 7 games. They struggled defensively, and could not solve the matchup problem caused by Joel Embiid.

So what happens in the new season, now that they have moved on from Jaylen Brown?

Jayson Tatum is still with the Celtics. They received veteran Paul George (and a bunch of picks) so they now have a reliable scorer (when PG is healthy). They still have Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, plus Baylor Scheierman and Sam Hauser. But perhaps, their biggest offseason acquisition was New York Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson–a bruiser who was a key piece in the Knicks championship run. The Celtics just got themselves a “Wemby-stopper,” and just took away a huge part of the Knicks’ rotation.

The Celtics, so far this offseason, have gotten better and worse. They lost a two-way player who was also a Finals MVP which hit their immediate title hopes, but gained some flexibility in the future through those draft picks.

Thus ends the Tatum-Brown era.
