Fantasy Series #7: The Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been jolted by the arrival of LaMelo Ball. Will he and Anthony Edward work well together?

The Minnesota Timberwolves got pretty far last season.
They matched up against MVP candidate Nikola Jokic and the mighty Denver Nuggets in the first round and won. Rudy Gobert was able to defend against Jokic, and even in the absence of an injured Anthony Edwards during some games, the scrapiness of Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, and scorer Ayo Dosunmu were just too much.
And then they played against the San Antonio Spurs. They did very well defensively, to the point that Victor Wembanyama got suspended for a game due to an unsportsmanlike elbow to the head of McDaniels. Yet, even if they won two games, they had really no answer to the younger Spurs, and that’s that for the Wolves’ 2026 title hopes.
How did they respond this offseason? They acquired star LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets, among others. The Timberwolves wanted to get Anthony Edwards some help, and they are expecting that Melo’s scoring abilities will make the difference come playoff time.
However, the Wolves let Julius Randle and Naz Reid walk away this summer, and they are seeing a quite significant hole in the PF spot. Experts are expecting a line-up of Ball, Edwards, Dosunmu–-with McDaniels at the 4 and Gobert at center–a line-up that looks great on paper, but could have difficulties when facing a team with a dominant big (Jokic, Wemby, even Holmgren).
The offseason is not yet done, and the Timberwolves could still get some players to fill in their roster spots. One thing is certain, though–LaMelo Ball’s arrival definitely brings a lot of hype into the Minnesota backcourt. It would be interesting to see how far they go next season.
