PNVF Extends Apologies to National Athletes Over Financial Concerns
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) apologized to its national athletes after Alas Pilipinas Men captain Bryan Bagunas raised concerns over the team’s financial difficulties.
In a statement released Sunday, the federation acknowledged Bagunas’ concerns and recognized that some national team players had to shoulder their own expenses and, in some cases, borrow money while preparing for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The PNVF said its current administration inherited “substantial financial liabilities and outstanding obligations” when Frank Lao assumed the federation presidency in August.
The federation is now conducting an inventory and review of its financial records, including funds previously received and how they were disbursed, as it works to establish a clearer picture of its financial standing.
Despite the ongoing financial review, the PNVF said it has taken steps to address the immediate needs of the national teams.
According to the federation, Lao personally advanced funds for several urgent expenses, including allowances for the Alas Men before their departure for the Asian Games, as well as ticketing and visa requirements.
The PNVF also said it accommodated the national team’s request for an additional round-trip ticket for one of its members.
However, the federation admitted that these measures were not enough.
The PNVF said it is committed to improving its financial accountability and strengthening the support given to the national teams while working to rebuild the federation.
The PNVF statement came after Bagunas said the team had not received its allowances from the federation since July, with some players having to borrow money to cover transportation and other expenses during training.
