Aurora Gaming Escapes Smart Omega Scare to Keep Playoffs Run Alive
Aurora Gaming PH refused to let its playoff run end, outlasting a resilient Smart Omega in a thrilling 3-2 victory in the MPL Philippines Season 18 Play-Ins at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
After an early exit last season, the defending world champions finally escaped the Play-Ins elimination round, but Smart Omega pushed them to the brink before having a sigh of relief.
In Game 1, Aurora endured a rough start against Smart Omega despite securing two of the three Turtle objectives. The M7 champions gradually trimmed the gold deficit, with Yue’s Zhuxin scoring a double kill during the 14:29 clash in the top lane.
Smart Omega regained the lead before Koyl’s Hirara turned a 20:52 mid-lane clash in Aurora’s favor with a Maniac, aided by Domeng’s Freya.
Smart Omega gambled on contesting the Lord at the 23-minute mark, but the move backfired. Domeng’s Freya narrowly escaped being picked off before securing a double kill. Meanwhile, Nathzz’s Barats thwarted Raizen’s Harley from executing a backdoor play, helping Aurora protect its advantage.
Aurora completed its comeback by wiping out Smart Omega to close out Game 1 in 24 minutes and 24 seconds.
Domeng’s Freya stood out with a 3-3-15 KDA, playing a key role in Aurora’s opening-game victory.
Smart Omega responded emphatically in Game 2, taking control of the major objectives and dictating the pace of the match.
Cull’s Obsidia secured a double kill after Aurora failed to contest the six-minute Turtle objective, despite Nathzz’s well-timed Throne of Ruin initiation with Alice.
Aurora’s defense finally crumbled during a 13:26 clash in the mid lane, where Raizen’s Aulus led the assault against Light’s Marcel, allowing Cull’s Obsidia to follow up with a game-winning double kill.
Cull’s performance was complemented by Raizen, who delivered a deathless 5-0-8 KDA to help Smart Omega level the series at 1-1.
Omega carried its momentum into Game 3, maintaining its aggression despite Aurora’s resistance. At the 20-minute mark, Omega secured the Lord and eliminated four Aurora members, leaving only Nathzz’s Gloo to defend the base. With a wave of minions advancing through the bottom lane, Omega capitalized on its advantage to close out the game.
Cull’s surprise Bruno pick proved effective, as he finished with a flawless 8-0-3 KDA to propel Smart Omega to a 2-1 series lead and match point.
With elimination looming, Aurora mounted a response in Game 4. The teams remained deadlocked at 5-5 beyond the nine-minute mark before Raizen’s Paquito secured the Lord and Cull’s Bruno followed up with a double kill, helping Smart Omega narrow the gold deficit.
Aurora wrested back control through consecutive Lord takes at the 14- and 18-minute marks. The Northern Lights capitalized on the objective pressure to launch a final siege, breaking through Smart Omega’s defenses and destroying its base despite all five Omega members being alive to defend.
Domeng’s Obsidia powered Aurora’s resurgence, finishing with a 3-0-5 KDA and 80% kill participation to force a winner-take-all Game 5.
The deciding game delivered another grueling battle, but Aurora found its opening through a brilliant Wrath of Dryad play that caught three Smart Omega members. The setup allowed Domeng’s Claude to secure a double kill, paving the way for Aurora to push toward the base with only Raizen’s Fanny left to defend.
Domeng once again claimed MVP honors, earning his third such recognition in the series with a 2-2-11 KDA to help Aurora close out the 3-2 victory.
With the hard-fought win, Aurora Gaming PH kept its playoff campaign alive and advanced to the upper bracket semifinals, where it will face defending champion Team Liquid PH.
