Fantasy News 3: Wemby’s Spurs

Victor Wembanyama rolls his ankle in a game against Dallas but proceeds to have a career night anyway. Do they have what it takes to win it all this season?

The Fantasy News weekly features the biggest names in the NBA, their statistical outlook, and their effect on their teams match-ups, win-loss, and stat production. The Fantasy News weekly includes stellar performances, trade rumors, and anything noteworthy around the league.

52 points, 24 rebounds, 8 blocks.

That was Wemby’s statline after the Spurs beat the Mavericks 112-111. Career high in points and rebounds.

Few other players come to mind. Wilt. Kareem. Shaq.

The Spurs have won seven straight games. They seem to have finally found their groove after losing the season’s first two games.

There are still challenges in terms of rotation–the three guard line-up featuring Harper, Castle, and Fox on the same floor would seem sub-optimal at times, and there seems to be tension as to who’s starting.

What would it take for the Spurs to win the championship this season?

Will Wemby be healthy and available? It is certainly amazing to see him drop 50, but that is not sustainable long-term. Against certain matchups (stronger opponents) they’d have to play a more balanced game with a more stable half-court offense. Spamming Wemby to play face-up iso for an entire season is surely not going to happen.

With Oklahoma’s injury woes, the Spurs seem to be facing lesser resistance, however, teams like the Houston Rockets, a fully healthy Minnesota Timberwolves, and a hot Portland Trailblazers team will pose interesting challenges.
