Fantasy News 1: OKC–the Best in the West?

The Oklahoma City Thunder won their first 2 games to open the season. Are they going back to the NBA Finals this year?

The Fantasy News weekly features the biggest names in the NBA, their statistical outlook, and their effect on their teams match-ups, win-loss, and stat production. The Fantasy News weekly includes stellar performances, trade rumors, and anything noteworthy around the league.

Two games in and the Oklahoma City Thunder are off to a great start. Correction–they are off to the best start.

They just beat their strongest rivals–the San Antonio Spurs–the team that beat them in the western conference finals last season. Their nemesis.

The Thunder’s suffocating defense held Victor Wembanyama down to 12 points on 1/13 shooting. Perhaps, the Thunder could have the best defense in the league, if they can stay healthy. They may have solved their Wembanyama problem.

The draft day decision to pick Aday Mara is paying off early–this 7’2” rookie center had a block against Wemby. Wemby-stopper? Too early to tell, but if this continues, that title may be well-earned.

Oklahoma City beat Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in game #2. In both games, Jalen Williams played a crucial role–defending, hustling, and scoring. He is available when reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is being blitzed by multiple defenders.

Cason Wallace and Jared McCain are both reliable shooters, while Isaiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams are proper bruisers inside, handling the likes of Wemby and Joker. So far, Chet Holmgren has played the usual role of a forward-wing type player who roams in the baseline and near the dunker’s spot.

Their deep bench should allow the starters to conserve their energy through the season. Ajay Mitchell, Alex Caruso, Nikola Topic, and Kenrich Williams are all capable players who can perform.
