UST Secures Commitments from Esteban, Cañete

UST has added another layer of promise to its future after Tiger Cubs standouts Charles Esteban and Kirk Cañete officially committed to the Growling Tigers, according to team manager Eric Ang.

The development gives the program two familiar in-house prospects who have already built strong ties within UST’s basketball system and now appear set to continue their journey at the collegiate level.

The commitment of Esteban and Cañete is significant for a UST side that has continued to invest in continuity and internal development.

Both players emerged from the Tiger Cubs program under coach Manu Iñigo as key contributors, and their move to the senior team reflects the school’s effort to keep its most promising talents within the fold.

For UST, securing their commitments is not only about adding depth, but also about preserving a pipeline that can help sustain the program in the coming years.

Cañete enters the next stage of his career with a strong reputation as one of the top young guards in the UST system. He was among the more recognized Tiger Cubs in recent months, earning attention for his playmaking, leadership, and steady production.

More than the numbers, Cañete established himself as a steady presence for the Tiger Cubs in pressure situations. He played with the poise of a floor leader, organized the offense, and helped keep the team composed during deep tournament runs.

Those qualities should make him an intriguing addition to the Growling Tigers, especially as UST looks for guards who can balance decision-making, tempo control, and competitiveness on both ends of the floor.

Esteban, meanwhile, gives UST another homegrown piece with proven productivity and familiarity with the program’s culture.

He played an important role for the Tiger Cubs throughout their recent campaigns and was one of the team’s reliable contributors during the 2026 NBTC run to the finals, where they nearly upset three-time champion Fil-Nation Select. His performances showed his ability to score, rebound, and make timely plays.

Earlier this month, Esteban and Cañete were among the Tiger Cubs standouts called up to join the Growling Tigers for the Asiabasket NSAC College Basketball Campus Tour, a sign that the senior team was already taking a close look at their potential.

Their official commitment now gives that progression a clearer direction and strengthens the sense that both players are part of UST’s longer-term plans.

For UST, the addition of Esteban and Cañete is about more than simply bringing in two talented juniors. It is also a statement about trust in player development, program identity, and the value of keeping successful high school standouts in España.
