People are In Love with Mongolia’s Olympic Attire

People are gushing over the intricate artwork and craftsmanship of Mongolia’s Olympic outfits, which have taken the internet by storm.

“Your craftsmanship is ethereal! Genghis Khan would be so proud!” wrote one user on Instagram.

“These look very good, very different, great stand-out styling for sporting events on the world stage!” added another.

Designed by fashion brand Michel&Amazonka, the outfits feature vests embroidered with golden threads and accessories inspired by Mongolia’s traditional attire. The outfits were officially unveiled on July 3, but became viral only this week.

The 32 Olympic athletes from Team Mongolia will wear the regal attires during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Symbolic elements in the design include the sun and moon or the Soyombo symbol, which symbolizes the existence of the Mongolian nation for eternity.

Also prominent on the vest is an embroidery of the sky and the Mongolian mountain ranges on a blue background. In Mongolia, their 10 mountains are sacred, and represent a symbol of national identity and the spiritual homeland of the nations. Some of these mountains are the oldest protected lands in the world. In the 12th century, Ghengis Khan designated Burkhan Khaldun Mountain a Sacred Mountain of the Mongol people.

It is obvious why such a geographical element would feature so prominently on the Olympic attire of Team Mongolia. Its mountains are steeped in sacred history, legend, and tradition, according to the Gandan Tegchilen Monastery’s ‘Sacred Sites of Mongolia’‘:

Buried deep within the traditional religion of Mongolia are legends, stories, even names which tell us a great deal about a proper relationship with nature. Flowing from pre-Buddhist cultures, enhanced and often codified by Buddhism and now fused with environmental awareness, the ancient names of sacred mountains, lakes and rivers indicate a profound respect for nature which is one of the hallmarks of Mongolian culture.”
