UP Maroons provide service to Butuan City

The UP Fighting Maroons turned words into action by giving back to the community of Butuan City last weekend.

Members of the team flew to the hometown of their leader JD Cagulangan in an effort to provide television sets, school supplies, and machineries that will benefit the students and teachers at Mahayahay Elementary School and surrounding areas. Furthermore, the players participated in a tree planting activity.

“Syempre nakakataba ng puso and natutuwa kami na nakatulong kami sa kanila, kahit sa maliit na paraan lang ba. Nagpapasalamat kami kay President Jijil  na ininvolve niya ang team dito. Sana hindi ito ang last time na makasama kami sa ganitong projects n’ya,” Cagulangan said in a press release by the team.

This trip came following the recent announcement last May 14 by UP President Atty. Angelo “Jijil” Jimenez who added “service” to “honor” and “excellence” as values that the Iskolar ng Bayan must live up to.

“Honor and Excellence has long been the motto of our beloved University. But let us not forget the root of our very existence – that is, to serve. That is why we should always remember to live by our new motto ‘Honor and Excellence in the Service of the Nation’. It’s our reason for being,” said the president, who was born with roots from the Manobo Tribe in Butuan City.

UP also played in an exhibition game against Cebu-based University of San Carlos Warriors, the bronze medalists of the CESAFI 2023. The Fighting Maroons won, 90-49.
