Teddy Pays Bashers No Mind, But His Sister Bares the Pain

A dream may belong to one person, but the weight of pursuing it is not always theirs to carry alone.

Criticism was nothing new to Team Liquid PH’s Dave “Teddy” Viaña, who had learned to live with the high expectations and scrutiny that came with pursuing a career in esports.

But while the young gold laner had learned to drown out the noise surrounding him, his older sister, Fevie, could no longer hide the pain of watching her little brother endure the harsh treatment of those who questioned his place in the game.

A Sister’s Breaking Point
In an emotional post on TikTok, Fevie revealed how deeply the experience had affected her, sharing how she had to pause her drive and hold back her tears as she tried to be there for her younger brother.

“I paused my own driving because I needed to be there para mag sundo. I tried to hold back my tears, to be the one who gave comfort—but looking at you, I realized you already carry joy that never fades,” Fevie wrote.

Her words painted a different picture of the young player who had become a frequent target of criticism throughout the season: one whose struggles extended beyond the Land of Dawn and whose journey was being witnessed just as closely by the people who loved him.

Team Liquid’s campaign in the MPL Philippines Season 18 came to an end after falling to Aurora Gaming PH, 3-4, in the Lower Bracket Finals last Saturday.

The defeat ended the Cavalry’s bid for an unprecedented four-peat championship and a return to the M-Series stage, leaving the defending champions without a ticket to the M8 World Championship.

It was another painful chapter in what had already been a difficult year for the organization.

After falling short at the M7 World Championship in January and suffering an early exit at the Mid-Season Cup (MSC) 2026, Team Liquid once again found itself unable to reach the international stage.

For Teddy, however, the disappointment was accompanied by another burden: the criticism that followed him throughout the season, with some questioning his performances and labeling him the team’s “weakest link.”

But even in a do-or-die series against Aurora, Teddy showed he was far from ready to back down.

The gold laner earned two MVP honors in the grueling best-of-seven affair, continuing to fight for Team Liquid’s championship hopes until the very end.

Although the result did not fall in their favor, Teddy received a show of appreciation from the opposing crowd, with Aurora fans chanting his name even as Team Liquid’s campaign came to a heartbreaking conclusion.

It was a reminder that while criticism can be deafening, it does not always tell the whole story of a player’s journey.

For Fevie, however, watching her younger brother become the subject of relentless bashing was a different kind of battle, one that extended far beyond the results of a single match.

A Dream He Refuses to Abandon
Behind the player who continues to show up onstage is a younger brother who once had to convince his family to let him pursue a career in esports.

And behind the criticism surrounding his performances is a family that has witnessed the sacrifices, uncertainties, and difficult decisions that came with that dream.

Fevie’s latest message was not the first time she had spoken about the struggles her younger brother faced. In an earlier TikTok post, she offered a more intimate glimpse into their relationship, sharing personal conversations that revealed just how determined Teddy was to hold on to his esports dream.

Despite the difficult moments and the criticism that came with his career, Teddy made it clear in their exchange that he had no intention of giving up on something he had fought so hard to pursue.

For Fevie, seeing that determination from her younger brother was both a source of pride and a reminder of how much he had endured along the way.

It was not simply about defending a professional player from people who questioned his abilities.

It was about standing up for the little brother she had watched grow up, the same person who continued to hold on to his aspirations even when the journey became increasingly difficult.

The People Who Carry The Weight With Him
And while Teddy may have learned to brush off the words of his detractors, he admitted that their criticism could still hurt the people closest to him.

“Personally, nalulungkot ako, natatakot ako para sa family ko. Wala naman talaga akong pake sa mga bashers, ’yung inaalala ko na lang is ’yung family ko at paano sila naaapektuhan,” Teddy told ALL-STAR.

His admission offered a glimpse into the very concern that made Fevie’s emotional messages all the more meaningful.

Teddy may be the one playing under the bright lights, facing the expectations of thousands of fans and carrying the responsibility of representing his team. But his family has been there through every high and low, sharing in the victories and quietly absorbing the pain that comes with the defeats.

And perhaps that is what makes Fevie’s message all the more meaningful.

In her latest post, she reminded Teddy that despite the laughter and taunts of others, people had seen his courage, resilience, and heart. She thanked him for refusing to back down and for remaining positive even when things did not go his way.

“They’re calling your name, bunsoy. They’re proud of you—proud of the fight you gave in the lower bracket finals. We saw your courage, your resilience, your heart,” she wrote.

“Babawi? Yes, you will—but this time with deeper lessons and overflowing gratitude guiding you.”

For a player whose journey has been defined by the pursuit of a dream, another setback does not necessarily mean the end of the road.

Team Liquid may have fallen short of its ambitions in 2026, and Teddy may have endured more criticism than he deserved. But the dream that brought him into esports remains something worth fighting for.

And when the noise becomes too loud, he can always find comfort in knowing that he does not have to fight every battle alone.
