Is VJ Edgecombe the Rookie of the Year?
The Philadelphia 76ers are fighting hard to take the empty throne in the Eastern conference. Is VJ Edgecombe the missing piece that is finally going to take them over the top?
“Are you on a day-off?”
Joel Embiid asked VJ Edgecombe this question during the halftime of their game against a depleted Denver Nuggets roster. Edgecombe had a very quiet first half, but had some small contributions as he struggled against Denver’s potent perimeter offense.
He went on to finish the game with 17 points, yet they ended up losing to a severely depleted Nuggets lineup.
It would seem like a lot is being expected from this year’s no. 3 pick, despite him being a rookie. Cooper Flagg is already the main man in Dallas, and Dylan Harper is already a key part of the San Antonio rotation.
Edgecombe has been showing a lot of promise already–he is their team’s second scoring option behind Tyrese Maxey which speak to his scoring abilities; he leads the league in the number of loose balls recovered which shows a lot of heart and hustle; and he is also a key piece in the Sixers’ defensive rotations. He is only behind Cooper Flagg in Rookie of the Year projections, which kind of makes sense when you look at his numbers.
But is he going to have a late post-season run with his current team? Maybe, if Embiid stays healthy and if Playoff P shows up. Or maybe, if Edgecombe steps into the consistency that makes rookie players future all-stars. They could be duking it out against the Celtics or the Pistons in the Eastern conference finals.
Is VJ Edgecombe the Rookie of the Year? Yes, he has a real chance, but it is up to him.
