Skechers SKX Reign Review: Performance You Shouldn’t Sleep On

Skechers has been on the rise as of late in the basketball shoe scene, and that climb has started to feel less like a surprise and more like a real shift in the performance footwear market.

What once looked like an unexpected entry into basketball now feels like a brand with genuine momentum. Between a growing NBA and WNBA presence, a stronger push into performance footwear, and a line that continues to expand with more serious on-court options, Skechers is making it known that it is no longer content being viewed strictly as a comfort-first lifestyle company.

With its latest next-level footwear, the Skechers SKX Reign, the trend continues.

Engineered for speed and support, this mid-top lace-up has Skechers comfort technology, the resilient HYPER BURST®. Spotted in the midsole and sockliner, the foam delivers ultra-lightweight and highly responsive cushioning.

The Skechers SKX Reign also features a durable TPU skin, breathable mesh upper, a rubber midfoot wrap for better support, and a comfort collar that wraps around the ankle and locks down the heel.

Some of its key materials include the full-length carbon-infused plate, which offers an extremely high stiffness-to-weight ratio for elevation, lateral movement, and next-level energy return, along with the durable GOODYEAR Performance Outsole, which provides top-tier traction for superior grip and enhanced stability.

That setup alone tells you what Skechers is aiming for here. The SKX Reign is not trying to be a casual crossover model with some basketball styling thrown in. This is a performance shoe built with modern tech, movement in mind, and a clear understanding of what today’s players expect from a serious hoop shoe.

From my experience, the Skechers SKX Reign is surprisingly an outstanding basketball shoe.

One notable pro is the comfort provided by the HYPER BURST foam’s responsive cushioning, which is suitable for long runs and offers impact protection. That comfort stands out immediately, and in a market where many performance shoes can lean too firm or too aggressive underfoot, the Reign finds a balance that feels playable and forgiving.

What also stands out for me is the support and stability. My foot felt secured and locked in due to the midfoot wrap and heel lockdown, which is great for lateral movements and physicality. For players who rely on quick changes in direction, strong base control, and confidence planting on drives or defensive slides, that secure ride becomes one of the shoe’s biggest strengths.

For the traction, the grip from the GOODYEAR rubber outsole is reliable for quick cuts and stops. It has a dependable bite, but it doesn’t feel slippery. That kind of consistency matters, especially for guards, wings, and versatile players who need to react without hesitation.

In general, the Skechers SKX Reign is a suggested footwear for players who prioritize comfort, support, and stability.

Even though the shoe still stands out as a strong overall option, there are a few drawbacks worth noting from my time playing in it. The most noticeable is that the SKX Reign can feel a bit heavy and bulky, especially for guards or quicker players who usually prefer a lighter, more minimal setup.

The design also leans more on the chunky, tech-heavy side, which may not appeal to hoopers looking for a sleeker or more streamlined look. Another point to consider is the $185 (a little under P11,000 in the Philippines) retail price, which places it in a premium range and could give some buyers pause, especially as Skechers continues to establish itself in the basketball footwear space.

What makes the shoe even more interesting is the timing. Released back in late 2024, the Skechers SKX Reign arrived during a stretch when the brand was becoming more aggressive and more visible in basketball. Instead of simply entering the category for attention, Skechers has been building real credibility through performance models, athlete partnerships, and a broader investment in the space. The Reign benefits from that momentum. It feels like part of a larger push rather than a standalone experiment.

That is what gives this shoe added relevance in today’s market. The SKX Reign represents where Skechers basketball is right now: confident, technically capable, and increasingly hard to overlook.

It may still surprise some players who have not yet taken the brand seriously in the performance category, but on court, the shoe makes a strong case for itself.

Our rating for the SKX Reign is a 7.5/10. Its biggest strengths are comfort, responsive cushioning, and solid traction, all of which help make it a dependable performance option for players who value support and on-court stability. At the same time, its heavier build and premium price keep it from scoring even higher.
