UP’s Gani Stevens Parts with PUMA, Eyes New Sneaker Deal

Gani Stevens has emerged as one of the premier young big men in Philippine college hoops. The 22-year-old Fighting Maroon is eyeing another UAAP title to end his college career on a high note, and with that, a new sneaker deal, too.

Stevens was signed with PUMA for the entirety of UAAP Season 88 where he averaged a decent 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game to contribute to UP’s runner-up finish.

The Minnesota native has worn different PUMA kicks from the signature lines of up and coming NBA stars LaMelo Ball and Tyrese Haliburton.

The 6-foot-7 big man, however, surprisingly brought out the “Lower Merion” Kobe 5s against the DLSU Green Archers during their Filoil preseason matchup this week.

In an exclusive interview afterwards with ALL-STAR Magazine, he confirmed his departure from PUMA.

According to him, some brands have already contacted his agent, PJ Pilares of TITAN Management Group, about a new partnership. He also stated that he is thankful for any shoe brand that will lend him a deal.

“I believe some have been talking to my agent, but right now, I’m just waiting [for them] to contact me directly,” Stevens said.

“Of course, you know I’m grateful for any shoe brand that wants to sign me, but I’m going with the masses, Nike or adidas, probably one of those two.”

Stevens mentioned that he is currently sporting some Kobes in his rotation.

“Just wearing whatever kind of right now, but yeah, I bought some Kobes recently, so that’s what I’ve been using.”

His top favorite sneakers are the Kobe 4s. He wore the Girl Dad colorway during his first year as a Maroon.

Here’s why he really loved Mamba’s 4th signature sneaker with the Swoosh:

“Even though I didn’t wear them today, probably Kobe 4s. Yeah, they’re like a bit wider for me, because, I’m a big man with wide feet, and they got some ankle support, so probably that.”

Stevens added that the PUMA Hali 1s are his second option and will still rock the pair while he’s a sneaker free agent. PUMA is also the official outfitter of the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP.

“To be honest, I do like the PUMA Haliburtons (PUMA Hali 1) a lot. They’re great. I probably might bring this out, even though I’m not signed; I’ll probably still wear those.”

Performance-wise, Stevens prefers footwear that prioritizes comfort and traction.

“And then obviously, the shoe looks good, right?” Stevens added about his list of preferences. “I don’t want to be a little flashy on the court, you know me, but yeah, for sure, for me, comfort and then traction [are the priorities.]”

Where will Gani Stevens head next after ending his partnership with PUMA? Will he sign a renowned sneaker brand like Nike or adidas? We’ll find out.
