Friday quickly turned into the day of upsets in the NCAA.

Despite coming in with a league-trailing 2-6 win-loss record, the Arellano Cheifs upset the league-leading CSB Blazers, 73-71, on Friday, October 4, at the San Juan Arena.

The loss dropped the Blazers to 6-2, putting them in a tie with the Mapua Cardinals for the second seed in the league standings towards the end of the first round of eliminations.

It was a momentous victory for Arellano despite the absence of Winston Ynot (flu) for CSB. The Blazers coughed up 24 turnovers, another sloppy performance following their recent close win against San Sebastian.

Jeadan Ongotan led the Chiefs with 16 markers while Ernest Geronimo fired up 14 points on an effective 6-of-7 shooting display. His jumper with under a minute to go provided Arellano a 4-point separation in the final moments.

CSB had the opportunity to tie with 7 seconds left and only down two, but Justine Sanchez’s last-shot attempt at overtime missed.

Allen Liwag propelled CSB with 18 points and 17 rebounds despite getting hit in the groin early in the game.
