Aurora Beats Team Liquid to Move One Win Away From M8 Slot

Aurora Gaming PH stunned defending champion Team Liquid PH with a 3-1 victory to secure its spot in the MPL Philippines Season 18 Upper Bracket Finals at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Northern Lights moved one step closer to returning to the Grand Finals and securing a spot at the M8 World Championship in Türkiye, where they hope to defend their title.

Meanwhile, Team Liquid PH must navigate the dreaded Lower Bracket to keep its historic four-peat bid alive.

Aurora’s victory showcased not only its brilliance but also its stamina, as the team endured a grueling nine games against Smart Omega and Team Liquid in less than 24 hours.

The Cavalry Draws First Blood
Team Liquid held a deathless 4-0 lead beyond the five-minute mark of Game 1 before Jaypee’s Minotaur gave up the team’s first death, falling to Light’s Khaleed during a jungle invasion at 5:08.

Koyl’s Hirara secured the first Lord for Aurora after the team came out ahead in a favorable 1-for-2 trade. However, Team Liquid failed to secure the second Lord or break through Aurora’s defenses during a 15-minute base siege, as Sanji’s Aurora Frigid Glacier setup helped establish a lead of as much as 7,400 gold.

Despite Aurora’s strong defense, Team Liquid’s crowd-control-heavy composition eventually proved too much to handle. The Cavalry broke through in the final siege against four defenders to claim the opening game.

KarlTzy’s Nolan made an immediate impact, posting a 5-1-5 KDA as Team Liquid drew first blood in the upper-bracket semifinals.

A Back and Forth Affair
In Game 2, Team Liquid capitalized on Aurora’s mispositioning at the 2:58 mark, sandwiching Domeng’s Esmeralda in the bottom lane. Jaypee’s Kalea used Tsunami Slam to lock him down, while Sanford’s Throne of Ruin stunned Nathzz’s Barats, setting up KarlTzy’s Nolan to secure a double kill.

Aurora cut the gold deficit to 1,500 after securing the final Turtle objective and scoring two crucial picks at 6:45, as Domeng’s Esmeralda eliminated KarlTzy while Light’s Masha took down Jaypee’s Kalea.

Aurora soon turned the momentum around, securing the first Lord and erasing its gold deficit. The Northern Lights then expanded their map control by taking down the top-lane inner turret, bottom-lane turret, and mid-lane outer turret.

After Koyl’s Hirara was picked off, Team Liquid PH moved to secure the Lord. Aurora took a risk, with Domeng’s Esmeralda eliminating KarlTzy’s Nolan, but Teddy’s Aulus stepped up to steal the 13-minute Lord and give Team Liquid PH some breathing room.

Team Liquid, however, struggled to overcome Aurora’s sustain and failed to contest the 16-minute Lord.

During a 17:31 push at Team Liquid’s mid-lane inhibitor turret, Nathzz’s Barats perfectly timed Missile Expert with Yue’s Kimmy’s Starlium Beam, setting up Koyl’s Hirara to secure a game-winning triple kill.

The game then swung back toward Aurora in a crucial 20-minute Lord fight. Domeng stole the objective with the help of Nathzz’s perfectly timed Detona’s Welcome, which prevented KarlTzy’s Nolan from using Retribution and paved the way for Aurora to wipe out Team Liquid.

Nathzz became Aurora’s frontline punching bag, absorbing over 229,000 damage while posting a 0-3-18 KDA.

Aurora’s Brilliance on Full Display
Aurora carried its momentum into Game 3, completely dismantling Team Liquid in just 13 minutes and 30 seconds. The Northern Lights finished with a dominant 16-1 kill score while keeping all nine of their defensive turrets intact.

Sanford’s Alice and Jaypee’s Minotaur attempted to defend the bottom-lane inhibitor turret, but their efforts fell short as Koyl’s Hirara and Yue’s Kimmy each secured a double kill.

Koyl powered Aurora to a 2-1 match point with a fierce 9-1-6 KDA outing.

Seizing the Win
Team Liquid fought back in Game 4, with Sanford’s Arlott putting up a valiant fight through a series of well-timed Final Slash plays. During a 13:34 clash at the mid-lane bush, he caught three Aurora members with the ultimate.

The Cavalry continued to search for an opening in the late game, with Sanford once again landing a three-man Final Slash-Flicker combo at 17:57. However, the play failed to deliver the desired result as Yue’s Eudora eliminated KarlTzy’s Harley.

The clash proved decisive, scattering Team Liquid across the map and leaving four of its players eliminated, with only Teddy remaining alive.

Although Team Liquid’s players respawned in time to defend their base, Aurora finally sealed the series during a 21-minute siege, with Domeng’s Clint scoring a double kill to help the Northern Lights close out the 3-1 victory.

Aurora Gaming PH will now face second-seeded Team Falcons PH in the Upper Bracket Finals on Friday. Falcons were the only team Aurora failed to defeat during the regular season, setting up a crucial rematch with a direct M8 World Championship berth on the line. The winner will become the first team to qualify for the tournament.
