Collins Akowe Commits to UST Growling Tigers

Highly touted big man Collins Akowe has officially committed to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, putting an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his next move after departing from National University, a source has informed ALL-STAR.

Akowe, the reigning UAAP Season 86 Juniors Most Valuable Player and Season 87 Best Foreign Student-Athlete, was one of the most sought-after prospects in the collegiate scene. Standing out with dominant numbers — averaging 20.8 points, 19.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game — he helped anchor the NU Bullpups throughout the juniors season. His sheer production translated to a league-leading 105.786 statistical points, propelling his team to the finals.

After his award-winning season, Akowe participated in NU’s PinoyLiga preseason lineup but made no formal commitment to stay. In May, he was noticeably absent from NU’s Filoil roster, triggering rumors of a transfer. He soon confirmed his decision to leave NU in pursuit of new opportunities and a system that could maximize his growth and immediate playing potential.

The 6-foot-10 forward quickly became a hot commodity. With his foreign student-athlete (FSA) eligibility and proven performance, top-tier UAAP programs were eager to secure his services. His decision reportedly came down to a final two: De La Salle University and UST. Ultimately, Akowe chose the Growling Tigers.

The move is a major coup for UST, a program in the midst of a return to Final Four prominence. Landing a talent like Akowe gives head coach Pido Jarencio’s squad a significant boost in the paint and a foundation around which to build for the upcoming UAAP seasons. With his rebounding prowess and post presence, Akowe brings immediate impact to a team that struggled with size and consistency this offseason.

With his blend of size, skill, and upside, Akowe’s next chapter at UST could be the beginning of something special — not just for the Growling Tigers, but for the league as a whole.
