Akowe to Leave NU, Eyes New Horizons in College Basketball
Collins Akowe, the dominant 6-foot-10 center who took Philippine high school basketball by storm, is officially parting ways with National University Nazareth School (NUNS). In an exclusive interview, the Nigerian star confirmed that he will not be suiting up for NU’s men’s basketball team in college.
“It’s a tough decision, you know?” Akowe shared. “Like I said, I never saw myself leaving to be honest. But due to some personal reasons and what I think might be best for me, I just have to put my head in a different direction.”
This news comes after months of speculation. While Akowe briefly lined up for NU in the PinoyLiga Collegiate Cup in April, both sides made it clear it was a trial, not a commitment. Offers have since poured in — including interest from overseas — and Akowe has been evaluating which path best supports his development.
And development is clearly at the center of his decision. “Development is all I gotta focus on right now,” he said. “It’s about to get tougher, because college basketball isn’t anything like high school. Got more competitions and stuff. Moving into a new system would be tough but I know I’d adjust for sure.”
Akowe departs NU with an impressive resume. In UAAP Season 87, he led the juniors division with 20.8 points, 19.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game. He topped the statistical race with 105.786 points and was named the league’s first-ever Best Foreign Student-Athlete — a recognition that underscored not only his performance, but also his impact on the local game.
But despite the accolades, Akowe speaks with deep respect and gratitude toward NU. “NU means the world to me, they’re my family. Would never forget them… they made me the Akowe everyone knows today,” he said. “All credits goes to them — the coaching staff, management and my teammates. Coach Kev isn’t like a coach to me but like a big bro.”
For now, Akowe remains undecided about his next destination. However, he has made it clear that he’s looking for a system that fits his style and supports his growth — whether in the Philippines or abroad.
As college programs begin to ramp up recruitment, one thing is certain: wherever Collins Akowe lands, he’s going to make an impact.
