The DLSU Green Archers refused to back down until the final buzzer, securing a thrilling 76-75 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons to tie the UAAP Finals at 1-1 on Wednesday, December 11, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
In an exclusive interview with ALL-STAR, veteran wingman JC Macalalag expressed the team’s joy over the hard-fought win while emphasizing that their work is far from over.
“Sobrang importante nung win sa’min, knowing na this game is going to be a close game,” said Macalalag. “Masaya kami na nakuha namin ‘yung win, pero ‘di natatapos lahat sa game ngayon. We still have Game 3, so kailangan pa naming magtrabaho para makuha ‘yung win sa Sunday.”
Macalalag faced adversity during the game, experiencing cramps in the second half, which he admitted he was still dealing with after the match. However, he remains determined to fully recover in time for the decisive Game 3.
“As of now, medyo ano pa eh. More on cramping. ‘Di pa ako masyado nakakarecover. So, we’re going to use the next three days para makarecover, para 100% na kami sa Game 3,” he shared.
The winner-takes-all finale is set for Sunday, December 15, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The pressure is at an all-time high, but Macalalag stressed the importance of preparation and staying focused.
“We just have to come prepared. [‘Yung pressure], that’s half of the battle, eh. So, if we’re prepared, we know what to do. Sigurong malaking tulong sa amin ‘yon.”
He continued, “We’ll have the same mindset as this game. It’s a do-or-die game. Kailangan na naming ibigay lahat.”
Macalalag also highlighted the team’s motivation to give their graduating standouts, Josh David and Lian Ramiro, a memorable farewell match.
“One last game for our seniors, si Josh and si Lian. So, hopefully, makuha namin ‘yung win,” he said.
