The Far Eastern University (FEU) U16 basketball team is set to represent the Philippines in the Japan B. League’s U16 Tournament, taking place from January 30 to February 3, 2025, in Tokyo. This marks a significant opportunity for the Tamaraws to showcase their talents on an international stage against some of the best young players from Asia.

The tournament will feature six teams, including three from Japan, two from Korea, and the lone Philippine representative, FEU. The competition format places the teams in two brackets, with the top two from each group advancing to the Final Four, culminating in a championship showdown.

FEU’s lineup is headlined by standout players Jharred Gutierrez, Mark Dulin, Prince Cariño, Jan Cagurungan, Patrick Pasinos, Chris Miranda, and Montae Lassiter. These young athletes have already gained recognition for their performances in the Philippines, and their participation in Tokyo is expected to elevate their game further.

Local sports agent Marvin Espiritu of Espiritu-Manotoc Basketball Management helped bridge this opportunity for FEU.

Recognition of FEU’s Legacy

Denok Miranda, FEU’s basketball program director and a former PBA standout, expressed pride in the team’s inclusion in the event.

“Malaking bagay yun na invite kami sa Japan B. League kasi na-recognize yun school namin, international na,” said Miranda. “Marami kami na pro-produce na professional basketball players at mga superstar sa PBA.”

(The invitation is a big deal because our school is recognized internationally. We’ve produced many professional basketball players and PBA superstars.)

Indeed, FEU has long been a cornerstone of Philippine basketball, with a legacy of developing players who thrive at the collegiate level and beyond.

A Stepping Stone for Greater Opportunities

The Japan B. League U16 Invitation Tournament offers invaluable experience for young athletes, exposing them to different playing styles and high-level competition. FEU’s participation not only strengthens their program but also highlights the Philippines’ growth as a prominent basketball nation in Asia.

Fans of FEU and Philippine basketball can look forward to seeing how these young Tamaraws fare against their international counterparts.
