Gavina Takes Over UE, Assembles Experienced Coaching Staff
The University of the East Red Warriors have officially welcomed Chris Gavina as their new head coach, signaling a new chapter for the storied basketball program. Known for his meticulous approach to player development and culture-building, Gavina is now tasked with leading UE back into contention in the highly competitive UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
Building a Strong Coaching Staff
One of Gavina’s first moves as head coach has been assembling a coaching staff that blends experience, championship pedigree, and player development expertise.
“At the moment, Alex Cabagnot will play a key role on my staff as a special assistant. Coach RJ Argamino, who was my lead assistant at the Taiwan Mustangs, will be joining me. Coach Paulo Hubalde will be part of my staff, and right now, KG Canaleta and Melvin Reyes are also on board. Other additions are still being discussed, but at the moment, this is what my staff is comprised of,” Gavina shared in an exclusive interview with ALL-STAR Magazine.
Cabagnot, a former PBA champion and one of the league’s most clutch players, brings invaluable leadership and basketball IQ to the Red Warriors’ bench. Though currently in Qatar for a talent identification trip for UE, Cabagnot is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s direction.
RJ Argamino, who worked with Gavina in the Taiwan Mustangs, adds continuity and familiarity to the system Gavina intends to implement. Paulo Hubalde, a former PBA veteran and son of PBA legend Freddie Hubalde, provides additional experience and mentorship. Meanwhile, KG Canaleta, a UE Red Warriors legend and multiple-time PBA slam dunk champion, returns to his alma mater, bringing knowledge from his professional playing days. Melvin Reyes, a key figure in UE, rounds out the early coaching roster.
Understanding UE’s Challenges and Opportunities
Gavina wasted no time addressing his new players, meeting them shortly after UE made the official announcement of his hiring.
“I was able to speak to all the players earlier today after the official announcement of UE to the entire UE community on hand at the UE Campus in Recto. I did get an opportunity to hear Precious Momowei share what he felt were hard lessons that they learned from their unfortunate exit from contention in reaching the Final Four last season,” Gavina explained.
However, he made it clear that he has yet to discuss with players their plans for next season, choosing instead to focus on those willing to buy into his vision.
“I did not ask anyone about their decisions of whether they would be coming back next year. What I did address is that for those that do decide to stay on board and buy into a culture where we bank on our sweat equity to achieve our goals of overcoming that hardship they experienced last season, they would be able to take advantage of the development I and my staff plan on executing,” he said.
Gavina is also waiting to meet with key returnees like John Abate, who is currently in the U.S. but is expected to return soon.
“John Abate, I was told, was in the States and would be coming back to campus within the week, and I’ll soon get my chance to hear him out and ask him what his goals are for his last season in the UAAP,” he added.
Restoring the Red Warriors’ Legacy
UE, a program rich in history but struggling to regain its former dominance, faces significant challenges in competing with better-funded UAAP programs. However, Gavina believes success isn’t just about financial resources.
“I understand the challenges and the history, but I also see great opportunities. Success isn’t just about budget; it’s about culture, discipline, and maximizing the potential of every player,” he emphasized.
With a vision focused on building a strong foundation, developing talent, and fostering a competitive mindset, Gavina remains committed to making the Red Warriors a force to be reckoned with once again.
“While resources are important, heart, work ethic, and teamwork can overcome many obstacles. We are committed to restoring UE’s legacy and making the Red Warriors a competitive force once again.”
As Gavina continues to evaluate the current roster and finalize his coaching staff, all eyes will be on how UE develops under his leadership. If his track record is any indication, the Red Warriors could soon be on their way back to relevance in the UAAP, although it won’t be easy.
