Mac McClung reflects on his NBA journey: “I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be”
Mac McClung has had quite a unique career path in the NBA. From being undrafted and bouncing in the G League to winning three straight slam dunk contest titles, it has been a roller coaster ride for the 26-year-old guard.
To put his distinct career into perspective, McClung – after winning the 2025 NBA Slam Dunk Contest – have now made more money from the dunk contest than from his NBA contracts, according to Spotrac. In over 5 seasons in the NBA, he only has appeared in 5 games in different stints with the Lakers, Bulls, Sixers, and Magic.
However, despite everything that has happened in his career, McClung shared that he would not trade his slam dunk contest achievements even if it meant securing a permanent roster spot in the NBA.
“I think I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” a relieved McClung said in his post-event press conference after winning the Slam Dunk title. “You know, I’m not looking at things like that. No matter what my ego thinks, or how I feel about my game, this is my life.”
McClung’s flair for dunking culminated in his unprecedented achievement of winning three consecutive NBA Slam Dunk Contests. His innovative and high-flying dunks have revitalized the event, earning admiration from fans and peers alike. Somewhere down the road, McClung might call a certain NBA team his home as he continues to persevere in his NBA dream, but for now he wants to soak everything in and cherish this special moment and history.
“I’m gonna keep applying pressure. I love hooping more than I love dunking, you know what I mean,” McClung said. “However, I really am just at peace with that, that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. But I’m gonna keep applying pressure for sure.”
Mac McClung’s basketball journey is a testament to his perseverance and passion for the game. From his early days as a high school sensation to his current status as a three-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion, McClung has consistently showcased his dedication to the sport. It has reflected his humility and unwavering commitment to enjoy the journey, trust the process, and emphasize his love for the game beyond the accolades.
