Philippines Pulls Away Late for 5-1 Win Over Myanmar in Tri-Nation Friendly

The Philippines turned a competitive match into a comfortable 5-1 victory over Myanmar in their Tri-Nation Friendly clash, using clinical finishing and a strong second-half performance to pull away from a determined opponent.

The hosts controlled possession for most of the opening half and spent long stretches attacking inside Myanmar’s half. However, Myanmar’s disciplined defensive shape and organized play prevented the Philippines from finding an early breakthrough.

Myanmar also showed attacking intent whenever opportunities presented themselves. The visitors nearly stunned the hosts in the 38th minute when they found the back of the net, but the goal was immediately ruled out for a clear offside.

The match carried a level of intensity rarely seen in friendlies.

Daisuke Sato survived an early injury scare after an aerial collision in the 11th minute, while yellow cards were shown to Myanmar’s Wai Lin Aung and Philippine players Jarvey Gayoso and Sandro Reyes as both sides battled physically throughout the first half.

The breakthrough finally arrived in first-half stoppage time.

André Leipold and Randy Schneider combined on a give-and-go sequence inside the penalty area before Leipold played a pass across goal. Jeff Tabinas arrived on the opposite side and finished from close range to give the Philippines a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Myanmar responded positively after the break and enjoyed a stronger spell of possession early in the second half as it searched for an equalizer. The visitors created several dangerous moments, but goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard and the Philippine defense stood firm whenever called upon.

The Philippines doubled its lead in the 54th minute.

Paul Tabinas initiated an attacking move before finding Cole Mrowka, who returned the ball into space for Tabinas to finish and double the hosts’ lead.

Although Myanmar continued to push forward and enjoyed periods of possession, the Philippines gradually regained control of the match.

The Philippines’ depth began to show in the 80th minute when substitute Scott Woods set up fellow substitute Sebastian Rasmussen for the hosts’ third goal.

Myanmar refused to go away quietly and pulled one back two minutes later through Win Naing Tun, rewarding the visitors for their persistence throughout the evening.

Any hopes of a comeback, however, were quickly extinguished by the Philippines’ substitutes.

Pocholo Bugas delivered a pair of assists in the closing stages, first finding André Leipold for the Philippines’ fourth goal in the 88th minute before setting up Rasmussen again in the 90th minute to complete his brace and cap the scoring.

The result highlighted the Philippines’ attacking depth, with Rasmussen, Bugas, and Woods all contributing off the bench as the hosts closed out a convincing 5-1 victory.
