San Sebastian set for coaching change as Labagala exit looms

San Sebastian College–Recoletos is expected to move in a new direction for its men’s basketball program, with multiple sources indicating that Rob Labagala will not return as head coach following NCAA Season 101.

Sources familiar with the situation said players were recently informed that Labagala would not be retained and that the school plans to install a new head coach, possibly as early as the weekend. While no official announcement has been made by the school, the internal briefing to players suggests a transition is imminent.

Labagala’s likely departure comes after a season marked by significant off-court challenges. During the campaign, he publicly acknowledged that the team endured extended periods without receiving promised financial support from its external backer. The situation reportedly forced members of the coaching staff to shoulder expenses out of pocket, including operational and travel-related costs, just to keep the program running.

Despite those difficulties, San Sebastian managed to remain competitive in NCAA Season 101. The Golden Stags finished the elimination round with a 7–11 record, good for a play-in berth, before bowing out to Lyceum of the Philippines University. The result represented an improvement in competitiveness compared to recent seasons and was widely viewed within league circles as a respectable showing given the instability surrounding the program.

Several observers have since noted that the team’s performance reflected steady system development and consistent effort, even as uncertainty over salaries and allowances lingered throughout the season. Labagala was hired in early 2025 to oversee a rebuilding effort, inheriting a roster that had struggled in prior campaigns.

As the school looks ahead, sources say Tony Tan has emerged as a strong candidate to take over the program. Tan is best known for his work with United Prep Canada, which has competed internationally, including in AsiaBasket tournaments held in the Philippines. His recent presence in regional basketball circles has reportedly fueled momentum behind his possible appointment.

San Sebastian has yet to comment publicly on either Labagala’s status or the identity of the next head coach.

If finalized, the coaching change would mark another reset for the Golden Stags as they attempt to build continuity following a season defined as much by resilience as by results.
