UAAP releases statement on Torres-Topex incident

The internet has blown up over the incident between the DLSU Green Archers and UP Fighting Maroons during their match on October 6, 2024.

People have been quick to comment regarding the incident and allegations. Ultimately, it escalated into a bigger discussion, and the UAAP has released its statement.

“After a thorough investigation into the events that transpired during the game between De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines last Sunday, October 6, 2024, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ Basketball Commissioner’s Office has issued stern warnings to DLSU Head Coach Michael Christopher “Topex” Robinson and UP student-athlete Reyland Torres for their unsportsmanlike conduct,” said UAAP in their statement.

UAAP stated that both sides displayed behaviors that did not reflect the values of sportsmanship by the association and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Specifically, Torres was found to have passed in Coach Topex’s space twice, while Coach Topex responded with inappropriate language.

While the association will only issue warnings to both parties, UAAP has highlighted that future violations will result in stricter penalties.

As for the allegations that Coach Topex spat on Reyland Torres, the UAAP revealed that there was not enough evidence found to conclude whether the incident was true or not.

“The UAAP emphasizes that it does not condone any form of unsportsmanlike behavior, as such actions are contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, as well as the ideals of fair play that the league intends to develop and instill through amateur sport.”
