Johncel Borjal Commits to NU, Embraces New Challenge in UAAP
Johncel Borjal is set to take the next step in his basketball career after committing to the NU Bulldogs for the upcoming UAAP men’s basketball season, a move that brings one of Cebu’s promising standouts to the country’s biggest collegiate stage.
Borjal confirmed that his decision to join National University came after he was contacted by the Bulldogs’ coaching staff. According to Borjal, the recruitment process began when Coach Kevin de Castro reached out to express NU’s interest in bringing him into the program. From there, conversations progressed quickly, leading to his eventual commitment.
The young guard said that NU’s culture played a major role in his choice. He described the program as “family-oriented,” noting that the coaches and staff were approachable and welcoming from the start. That environment, he said, made the transition to a Manila-based school feel more manageable as he adjusts to life and basketball in the capital.
Borjal is expected to contribute on both ends of the floor. He shared that the trust shown by Coach Jeff Napa centers on his defense and shooting, areas he believes can immediately help the Bulldogs. He added that his focus will be on giving his best effort every time he steps on the court in an NU jersey.
At the same time, Borjal is clear about where he still needs to grow. He pointed to decision-making as an area he wants to improve, especially as the pace and complexity of the collegiate game continue to challenge him. He acknowledged that there are still adjustments to be made, but sees them as part of his development.
Coming from the province, Borjal noted a clear difference in competition compared to Manila. He said basketball back home often felt more relaxed, while playing in the capital exposed him to concepts and details he had not encountered before. That learning curve, he believes, has helped him mature as a player.
Borjal is no stranger to competitive environments. He previously drew attention in high school and grassroots tournaments, including strong performances in NBTC events with Cebu-based teams, where he showed his ability to score, defend, and play with intensity against top-level opposition.
Looking ahead to his UAAP debut, Borjal is particularly excited to face contenders UP Fighting Maroons and the De La Salle Green Archers.
