Irish Coquia Joins Canada 3×3 Roster
The basketball calendar is set to get busier this summer for Irish Coquia, with the Filipino-Canadian guard earning a place in Canada’s 3×3 program while his college future remains open.
Ronald Dadivas of Agent D Sports Management, Coquia’s manager in the Philippines, said Coquia has joined Canada’s U21 3×3 men’s pool that will compete in Paraguay from July 20 to 26. He is also set to be part of Canada’s U23 pool that will compete in Chile from June 27 to July 3.
The development gives Coquia another international platform after building his name through the Canadian high school and NCAA college basketball scene. It also adds another layer to his profile as a dual citizen who holds both Philippine and Canadian passports, making him a player of interest on both sides of his basketball identity.
Coquia, a guard from Vancouver, British Columbia, most recently suited up for the University of New Orleans after transferring from Simon Fraser University.
His rise continued at Simon Fraser, where he became one of the Red Leafs’ key players. In the 2024-25 season, Coquia averaged 16.9 points and 4.8 assists per game, numbers that helped him earn second-team all-conference honors in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Coquia later moved to New Orleans, giving him a chance to compete at the NCAA Division I level. While his role there was more limited, the experience placed him in a higher-level environment and kept him on the radar of teams and programs tracking Filipino-Canadian talent.
In recent months, Coquia has also been linked to interest from the Philippines college basketball scene, particularly after he joined La Salle in offseason tournaments. However, Coquia has not made an official commitment to any UAAP school for college basketball.
That distinction is important as speculation continues around his next move. For now, his confirmed upcoming opportunity is with Canada’s 3×3 program, where he will get the chance to test his game in a faster, more physical format that rewards guards who can shoot, make quick decisions, and defend in space.
For Coquia, the summer assignments in Chile and Paraguay could serve as another step in a career that continues to stretch across Canada, the United States, and the Philippines.
