From Fighting for His Life to Making History
There was a time when football came second.
In November 2020, Raúl Jiménez suffered a life-threatening skull fracture after a horrific collision during a Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal. The injury required emergency surgery and left the football world wondering if the Mexican striker would ever be the same again.
Some feared his career was over. Others believed that, even if he returned, the ruthless goalscorer Mexico had relied on for years would never truly come back.
Nearly six years later, Jiménez has written a different ending.
The Mexican striker scored his 47th international goal in El Tri’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, moving into second place on Mexico’s all-time scoring list. Only Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, with 51 goals, has found the net more times for the national team.
The goal also moved him within five of Mexico’s all-time scoring record.

The number itself is impressive, but it’s the journey behind it that makes this moment special.
Since returning from his injury, Jiménez has battled setbacks, inconsistent form, and the challenge of rebuilding his confidence while continuing to wear protective headgear. Every goal and every minute on the pitch, became another reminder of just how far he had come.
Now, on football’s biggest stage, he’s making history once again.
Whether you’re a Mexico supporter or not, it’s hard not to smile watching Raúl Jiménez reach this milestone. Stories like these remind us why we love football. Sometimes the greatest victories aren’t trophies or records—they’re simply proving that the ending everyone feared doesn’t have to be the one that defines you.
Raúl Jiménez’s 47th goal for Mexico is more than another statistic. It’s one of football’s finest comeback stories.
