Marlon Marcelo on his surprise return to Dota 2 casting: “Dota holds a very special place in my heart”

Philippine Esports Organization (PeSO) Executive Director Marlon “Lon” Marcelo never expected to be back behind a Dota 2 casting desk.

But during the Esports Nations Cup SEA-Oceania Qualifiers on June 30, one of Philippine esports’ pioneering voices found himself calling the action once again.

Long before becoming one of the leading figures behind Philippine esports, Marcelo experienced the industry’s earliest days firsthand—from grassroots cybercafé tournaments to the Filipinos taking over the global stage.

After years of helping build Philippine esports behind the scenes as PeSO Executive Director, Marcelo’s return behind the microphone became more than a nostalgic appearance—it was a reminder of where both his career and Philippine esports began.

Taking a walk down memory lane
Lon first entered Philippine esports as a member of the community before eventually helping organize local tournaments and later becoming one of the country’s early Dota 2 casters.

He later built a reputation as a caster, shoutcasting matches and hyping up crowds during Dota 2 tournaments held inside internet cafés.
At Mineski Infinity Taft—then considered one of the most advanced cybercafé branches in the Philippines—the setup offered an early glimpse of what esports events could eventually become. With improved facilities, stable internet connections, and dedicated viewing areas, it became a testing ground for early production and broadcast experimentation.

There, Lon, together with fellow esports figures Tryke Gutierrez and Alodia Gosiengfiao, worked hard with dedication despite not getting much in return.

Giving voice to the Miracle of TI6
From those early days in cybercafés, Lon would go on to become one of the key figures who helped shape the country’s competitive gaming landscape.
As Philippine esports expanded, Lon’s role grew alongside it. He eventually became part of the Philippine community broadcast coverage of The International 2016 (TI6) in Seattle, alongside casting partner Aldrin “Dunoo” Pangan, bringing Pinoy shoutcasting energy to one of the biggest stages in global esports.

It was during the tournament that they witnessed one of Dota 2’s most iconic moments: TNC Pro Team’s historic upset over OG in the lower bracket of TI6, a series still remembered by fans as the “Miracle at TI6.”

The 2–0 victory not only secured TNC a Top 8 finish but also became a defining moment in esports history for Filipino fans, symbolizing the country’s ability to compete on the world stage.

Echoes of the past
Now serving as Executive Director of PeSO, Lon reflected on his unexpected return behind the casting desk with a perspective shaped by years of helping develop Philippine esports from behind the scenes.

“It feels incredibly nostalgic to step back behind the microphone and cast Dota 2 once again,” Lon said. “Dota holds a very special place in my heart—it is where my journey in esports truly began, and where I first connected with so many of you in the community.”

“While my day-to-day work at PeSO keeps me busy behind the scenes, my passion for the game and the energy of the matches has never faded. Getting the opportunity to be at the caster’s desk again, analyze the plays, and share that energy with the fans is something I’ve truly missed.”

Lon also thanked both longtime supporters and a new generation of fans who continue to sustain the growth of the scene.
“Maraming salamat sa mga dati pang fans ng early days of PH esports, at sa mga bagong fans keeping the fire alive. Thank you for the warm welcome back.”

Full circle moment
From shoutcasting matches inside cybercafés to helping shape the structure of Philippine esports at a national level, Lon’s appearance behind the caster’s desk became a full-circle moment that bridged the industry’s earliest days with its modern competitive era.

For a brief window during the SEA-Oceania qualifiers, the executive once again found himself calling the action—not simply to revisit old memories, but to reconnect with the roots of a journey that helped define both his career and Philippine esports.

In many ways, that moment reflected not only how far Philippine esports has come, but also the lasting impact of the voices that helped shape its earliest chapters.
