The Phoenix Suns had some glimmers last season.
Gone were the listless, underwhelming days of Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Deandre Ayton–Phoenix actually had the 9th best defense in the league last season. The scrappiness of Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, and Ryan Dunn made the Suns an annoying team to play against. Mark Williams is a decent interior defensive presence, and Osho Ighodaro actually had good days. Devin Booker is still the team’s star, averaging 26 a game.
The big chasm between a play-in survivor and a top tier team came into full view during the Suns-Thunder series–Phoenix, young as they are, had no chance against the talent, length, and depth of the defending champs. The series was not even close.
During the offseason, Phoenix let go of Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen, two defensive wings (O’Neale can shoot), and added Miles Bridges, another potential 20 ppg scorer, and Luke Kennard, a sharpshooter from 3. They lost some stopping power, but the starting five looks good on paper–Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Miles Bridges, and Ighodaro (or Mark Williams once he recovers from his torn labrum injury).
Question is, can these adjustments be enough to get a good playoff seed at the end of it all?
Can Booker and Green compete with elite backcourts in the western conference? There are so many dynamic duos to watch out for this season: Oklahoma’s SGA and J-Dub, San Antonio’s Castle and Harper, Minnesota’s Ant-Man and Melo, and Portland’s Dame and Ja, among others.
Dillon Brooks has already been involved in an altercation just mere seconds into their first preseason game. If the squad can keep their scrappiness, then perhaps, it can be an x-factor in the season.
