Other Teams Wanted Spider-Milez in Main 5. But He Chose to Be Onic’s 6th Man

Brian Miles Santos, known to fans as Spider-Milez, could have been a starting player on almost any roster. In fact, ahead of MPL Philippines Season 14, multiple teams offered him a main spot. But instead of grabbing these coveted roles, Milez made a bold choice: he joined Fnatic Onic Philippines as their sixth man. This gamble, a rare move for a player of his caliber, has paid off spectacularly—Onic clinched the championship, and they’re now gearing up to represent the Philippines in the M6 World Championship.

It’s a decision that goes beyond playtime. For Milez, the decision to step into a supporting role was anything but typical.

“Tatlong teams ang kumukuha sa akin for Season 14,” he revealed, noting that two of these teams wanted him on their main five

“Pinili ko po ang Onic kasi gusto kong lumabas sa comfort zone ko,” he explained, underscoring his desire to push past his limits and test himself in an unfamiliar environment.

It wasn’t about comfort, he shared. Rather, it was a challenge to see what he could become with a new team. “Mas comfortable ako sa mga kasama doon. Ito lang Onic ang bagong environment, bagong tao. Sumugal talaga ako para mas ma-improve ko pa ang sarili ko.” That choice to prioritize self-improvement over guaranteed starting minutes speaks to Milez’s depth as a competitor—and a person.

The Sixth-Man Mindset of Acceptance

Embracing the sixth man role wasn’t easy for Milez, especially after being such an integral part of his previous team’s lineup. “Syempre nakakapanibago,” he admitted. “Last season, babad ako sa playtime. Naiintindihan ko naman na hindi ako nakakapaglaro at tanggap ko rin, kasi based sa performance, mas nag-effort talaga si Brusko.”

But for Milez, every player’s success is a shared triumph. “Acceptance lang talaga iyon,” he said, reflecting on the pride he feels in seeing his team reach new heights. “Iisang team lang din naman kayo, lalo na nananalo din, nakaka proud pa rin.” In a competitive field where egos can run high, Milez’s humility and team-first mindset set him apart.

Spider-Milez Has A Message for Future Sixth Men

From watching scrims to running his own ranked games, Milez ensures he remains an active presence in Onic’s boot camp. “Ginagawa ko sa boot camp, kapag naglalaro o nagra-ranked games ako, nagsa-share ako sa kanila kapag may mga bagong insights o heroes akong nakikita, mga emblems, items,” he explained. “Simple lang.” Even off the main roster, his involvement provides an invaluable support system, reinforcing the idea that every team member has a role to play in collective success.

A Message for Future Sixth Men

For many competitive players, the thought of being a sixth man could be disheartening, but Milez has a message for those in similar shoes.

“Wag kang ma-depress or ma-down kapag hindi ka nakakapaglaro kasi kung deserve mo naman talaga maglaro, ibibigay iyan ng coach mo,” he shared.

He knows firsthand that even if a player is benched, their contributions still matter.

“Gawin mo lang ang grind mo hanggang sa maging deserve mo na ang spot.”

As he prepares to represent the Philippines in the M6 World Championship, Milez is living proof that growth sometimes means stepping back to leap forward. His journey highlights that taking a gamble on oneself and the team can lead to unexpected greatness—both as a player and a person.

“Hindi porket 6th man ka, wala kang silbi.”

As Milez reflects on his choice to decline major main-roster offers from top MPL teams, a quiet, confident smile emerges, signaling no regrets.

Sometimes, greatness lies just beyond the hard choices.
