Filipino Olympian Carlos Yulo had electrifying moments during his performance in the All-Around finale of men’s artistic gymnastics in the 2024 Paris Olympics where he displayed his overall ability and years of preparation, however an early miscue in his opening apparatus proved too big a hurdle to overcome in his quest for a medal finish.

The 24-year-old finished 12th overall with a -3.800 gap to the gold medalist, Shinnosuke Oka of Japan (86.832). China’s Zhang Boheng (86.599) and Xiao Ruoteng (86.364) came in silver and bronze, respectively. Yulo finished tied as the second-best performer in the Vault apparatus of the All-Around finale, a good sign for an upcoming event he will participate in.

Yulo’s final score in the qualifying round (83.631) was better than his performance in the All-Around final. His low showing in Pommel Horse played the biggest role in his drop-off and arguably cost him a chance to compete for a medal on Wednesday.

Making the All-Around final was a developmental step for Yulo who missed this event in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

His remaining opportunities to win a medal in Paris will be when he competes in the final for the men’s artistic gymnastics Floor Exercise and Vault apparatus on August 3 and 4, respectively.
