The Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) made a strong statement in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers opener with a commanding 4-1 victory over the Maldives on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
The following morning we sat down and had a chat with Michael Kempter, one of the four captains of the national team. Kempter expressed his immense pride in the team’s management, coaching staff, and players, emphasizing the clear direction the team is heading in. He also highlighted the high potential of the squad’s young core, believing they have a bright future ahead.
Newcomers Randy Schneider and Josef Baccay made an instant impact, with Schneider scoring a goal and providing an assist, while Baccay, coming on as a second-half substitute, delivered a crucial assist for the team’s fourth goal in stoppage time.

“I was very happy for Randy (Schneider). He struggled a bit during the first few minutes when he entered – maybe because of the weather. Slowly, he adapted and scored in his debut,” Kempter added.
Midfielder Sandro Reyes was at the heart of the action, dictating play with his vision, control, and crisp passing. His ability to orchestrate attacks and maintain composure under pressure allowed the team to break down the Maldives’ defense effortlessly. Reyes capped off his standout performance with both a goal and an assist, further solidifying his importance in the squad.

The Philippines’ calmness during possessions and their fluid style of play—starting from the back line—ensured they were in control for most of the match, rarely allowing the Maldives to build momentum. The defenders played a crucial role in initiating attacks, calmly playing out from the back and progressing the ball through the midfield with confidence.
As for Kempter himself, who is also a left back, he was subbed out after the first half. ALL-STAR asked him if this was intentional and he verified by saying that it was. “Yes, it was really part of the game plan. We wanted the younger guys to get more playing time.” he shared.

With this dominant performance, the Philippines takes the top spot in Group A, setting the tone for the rest of their qualifying campaign. The team will now look to carry this momentum into their next crucial fixture against Tajikistan on June 10.
