Filipino-Canadian Kadan Valdes Commits to UST Growling Tigers
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers have secured a significant addition to their roster with the commitment of 6’5″ Filipino-Canadian forward Kadan Valdes. A standout from Toronto’s Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School and a product of Crossover Canada, Valdes is set to join UST for UAAP Season 88, bringing with him five years of collegiate eligibility.
Valdes’s commitment comes at a pivotal time for UST. Under the leadership of returning head coach Pido Jarencio, the Growling Tigers ended a five-year Final Four drought in Season 87, finishing the elimination round with a 7–7 record and securing the third seed. Their postseason run concluded with a semifinal loss to the UP Fighting Maroons, 78–69.
The team’s resurgence was fueled by key players such as captain Nic Cabañero, who earned a spot on the Mythical Team, and newcomers like Forthsky Padrigao and NCAA juniors MVP Amiel Acido . Despite these advancements, UST faced challenges with roster depth and consistency, particularly in the forward position.
Valdes’s arrival is anticipated to address these gaps. Known for his versatility, athleticism, and defensive prowess, he is expected to complement the existing lineup, providing additional options on both ends of the court. His international experience and fresh perspective could also offer strategic advantages as UST aims to build upon its recent success.
With Valdes joining the ranks, the Growling Tigers are poised to enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season. His integration into the team will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as UST continues its pursuit of a championship title.
